. @CaptUSMCNole is correct. Read a book called Hatred’s Kingdom by Dore Gold to get an understanding of the relationship between Sunni extremism and the House of Saud. The sect that gave birth to Al Queda (I am blanking in the name) is an extreme radical sect. But very entrenched. And was always close to the government. MBS is charting a dangerous course in trying to change things. The fear of Iran is a motivator.

I would add that 15 of the 19 9-11 terrorists were Saudi nationals. The House of Saud essentially entered into a Faustian bargain with the Wahabi clergy. As a point of information Wahabism is a very extreme form of Sunni Islam. In exchange for its support, the Saudi royal family agreed to impose an extreme form of Islam domestically and to fund radical mosques throughout the Muslim world and as well as in countries without a Muslim majority. Those mosques became the source of terrorists throughout the world. I would agree that MBS has been trying to change things motivated by a real fear of Iran.

A great article on the subject.
Saudis and Extremism: ‘Both the Arsonists and the Firefighters’
In the realm of extremist Islam, the Saudis are “both the arsonists and the firefighters,” said William McCants, a Brookings Institution scholar. “They promote a very toxic form of Islam that draws sharp lines between a small number of true believers and everyone else, Muslim and non-Muslim,” he said, providing ideological fodder for violent jihadists.

Yet at the same time, “they’re our partners in counterterrorism,” said Mr. McCants, one of three dozen academics, government officials and experts on Islam from multiple countries interviewed for this article.

I think MBS is trying to break his family's side of the deal with the Wahabists but do so in a way that allows Saudi Arabia to retain the image of a Muslim nation that is worthy of the protecting of the two holiest sites in Islam. It is a dangerous, tight rope to walk and it is not going to be easy or pretty.

Agree with you here. Iran is a terrorist state. Can you even make peace with terrorists? But Israel tried.

My main pushback on the situation is that while Israel are doing a thorough job of wiping out Hamas and Hezbollah leadership, the root of the problem is Iran and as long as Iran can spawn more proxies, they will simply replace the leadership that have perished. Add to that, they'll have fertile ground for new recruitment due to the ease with which their proxies can stir up local resentment towards Israel (with the bombings). It seems to me that Iran has been the catalyst for terror in the region for a long, long time. Yet, we take a kids glove approach with Tehran. They will continue being a menace for as long as they are allowed to. We can celebrate these killings all day long, but they will simply be replaced and replenished in time.

Aaaaand right on queue CNN with their Israel ‘must show restraint’ and ceasefire article. Thankfully the IDF has ignored this nonsense and will continue to speak to these jackals in the only language the understand. Overwhelming force

    https://www.cnn.com/2024/09/28/midd...ed-israel-next-steps-analysis-intl/index.html

    From CNN article
Yet most profoundly, it is Israel’s next steps that matter most. It has shown that it has the intelligence advantage, military might, and tolerance for international condemnation of civilian casualties to continue to strike at will. But this risks turning a fortnight of brutal strikes into another longer term loss to Israeli prestige.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has a defining choice to make. Does the past fortnight salvage his domestic reputation for security and leave him better placed to face the music of the cases against him? Or does he again calculate that an ongoing war without clear strategic direction is his best way forward?

Ultimately a wider field of vision must win out. Lebanon’s civilians - and its southern neighbors - need political accommodation and a ceasefire now, regardless of what it means for the fate of Israel’s current political elite

Wahhabism. Thanks. I could not think of it this morning. Saudi Arabia is trying to reign that in now.

They have a completely different take on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Those civilians need a ceasefire too. Or they are at risk. So did the civilians in Afghanistan when we were after Al Queda. And in Iraq. Nasrallah is a terrorist and an enemy of the US. There is an utter lack of clarity on this

Funny how Hamas' stated goal of wiping Israel off the map and pushing all the Jews into the sea is never brought up when people discuss why a ceasefire is so elusive.

It is Hezbollah’s equally stated goal. The western world demands that Israel enter into ceasefire deals with terrorist organizations like they are legitimate governments. And always blames Netanyahu or Israel when there are no indications that the terrorists even want a deal. As for Hamas, Even after Bild got hold of Sinwar’s instructions on how to avoid a cease fire deal so civilians will be killed and Israel will be damaged. And Hezbollah could have had a cease fire deal any time over the last 11 months. They just had to stop firing. The calls for a cease fire get loud when Israel finally starts to escalate its response. In a little over a week, Israel destroyed Hezbollahs leadership. In one attack, they took out the group planning an invasion. They were accused of terrorism for a strategic attack using Hezbollahs own communications system in a way that minimized civilian casualties and wiped out the communications system. And yesterday they took out Hezbollah’s leader and the senior people he was with. I don’t like Netanyahu— I will make that clear. Even the opposition parties are aligned with this. But it’s too late for a ceasefire with Hezbollah. I don’t blame him for now. As for Hamas, notice how the missiles aren’t firing anymore from Gaza? They are severely degraded. I am all for a ceasefire in Gaza that brings the hostages home

And it wasn’t just that he kept firing; they INCREASED firing, and did so for the militaristic strategy of forcing Israel to move and deflect resources from the War against Hamas, where the World was already condemning Israel in its War against the terrorists. Hezbollah was the aggressor and continued to be the aggressor, until Israel decided no more, and meant it this time.

Body of Hezbollah leader has been recovered, sources say (msn.com)

CAIRO (Reuters) - The body of Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah has been recovered from the site of an Israeli air attack on Beirut's southern suburbs and is intact, a medical source and a security source told Reuters on Sunday.

While Hezbollah's statement on Saturday confirming Nasrallah's death did not say how exactly he was killed nor when his funeral would be, the two sources said his body had no direct wounds and that it appeared the cause of death was blunt trauma from the force of the blast.

    (Reporting by Beirut Bureau)

    Good riddance.
