Which is why it is important to buy flood insurance even when outside the mapped FEMA flood zones. Buying and maintaining fed flood insurance before you get put into a flood zone allows you to keep the lower rate, however I have been told that those preferred rates can go away based upon proximity to a body of water. I bought my house before the flood zone was expanded to include me and my premium stayed at the preferred rate. I’m not sure if that is still the case because the last flood map revision moved me back out of the flood zone. I do believe that FEMA flood mapping will only expand in the future. If you don’t have flood insurance and are not far from a mapped flood zone, look into pursuing flood insurance to weigh your risk versus peace of mind.
In western NC no trees down, no structures damaged for me. But no cell or internet service unless i walk a short distance down the road where i have long range views then i can get cell service. Got a little choked up watching the video posted by Alan where those people just stood there and watched everything get destroyed. The wife deserves an award for being able to hold it together like that. I can't even imagine...
A lot of the towns I spent summers at look to just be completely obliterated. Boone, Brevard, sounds like all of Western NC is still completely isolated with road closures and just devastated. I was told their are feet of standing water in downtown Boone. No cell service anywhere so nobody can communicate with loved ones or rescue operations.

Multiple people have asked him to delete the tweet, but he insists the entire town is completely gone. Dude is a yankee news guy looking for clicks.
Heck the lines can go right across your parcel. We once had property that only had about 20 sq ft in a flood plane and we were required to have flood insurance because of it

Some of my best friends here in my eyes are some I disagree with in a lot of conversations. I guess I just assume that we would all agree on a lot more than the 3 rehashed topics we argue about here. We have all been impacted. I have experienced storm impact In some tough ways myself in the past and understand how daunting it seems when looking ahead. Its the bonding of community that truly heals us all. And I know the term "thoughts and prayers" get's a lot of play here on both sides, but please know that you are truly in mine tonight.
I could probably post ten tweets pretty quickly of people stuck without food or water, with medical conditions, small kids and nowhere to go because all roads are gone. One stood out that I can’t find right now, but a woman was trying to get her sister rescued. The woman pleading had lost her parents and niece already in the same house her sister was trapped in. The info over the next week as it trickles out is going to be devastating. A bunch of tweets tonight about how this the their Katrina.
Hopefully the media gives it the same airtime and the celebrities provide the same fund raising events as they did Katrina. Unfortunately there is so much damage up the coast of Florida and all through the south east where do you help first. So many lost so much.
We just got out of that area and had to get through Asheville on the way back. Saw some minor flooding (swollen rivers and creeks), but we were out probably 12 hours before things got really serious and roads started washing out. Pretty stupid to even cut it that close, but I didn’t want to drive mountain roads in the middle of the night thinking it was possible mudslides were already happening. Pretty surreal seeing the images of all those highways and bridges washed out - but I knew on the way out a lot of them would be. I was monitoring the hurricane for the return trip, there really wasn’t much advance warning as far as mountain flooding (other than common sense of not being there when the actual hurricane hits), although the day before i was reading some bad predictions on Reddit which had me sweating the last minute exit. In the 2-3 days prior nobody was talking about it or doing any preparations of any kind that I could see, the weather forecast just sort of went from light rain to back to back overnight deluges and “oh, by the way those hurricane remnants are on the way here too so that’s going to be a 100 year flood). It all sort of evolved as the hurricane intensified. I’m guessing people around there don’t “evacuate” like the crazy exodus of people from FL hurricanes.
The tree that fell in between my gf's (white) and her neighbor's. Her other neighbor wasn't as lucky. The tree that fell in the backyard ruined her pool We made it out pretty good compared to the other houses on the street. The adjuster is here and he mentioned there has been at least 4 puncture wound deaths. The big tree in the driveway came down when the eyewall was passing over. I dunno if this has been confirmed, since I think the weather stations at the airport and Moody AFB failed during the storm.
