I agree. Why the heck do schools even pay a buyout to Head Coaches? You should get paid a yearly salary and that is that. Sticklin is a terrible negotiater. He cant hire the next coach. He has been taken to the woodshed twice.

Come on man? Foley 3 failed coaches. Stricklin 2 failed coaches. No, Foley doesn’t get
Credit for Urban because Bernie told him to hire him the same as the big money guys will tell Stricklin who to hire next.

What competent coach would sign on without a buyout these days? Competent coaches do not need to come here.

By that logic the big money guys told Foley to hire the duds also. Either Foley gets credit for both the good and bad or neither in my book. You can't have it both ways.

    I don't know. Urban?

I don't disagree with any implications that we've tried repeatedly to hire on a budget and have purposefully not swung for the fences with truly top candidates. We do, maybe, still disagree about Napier being given a premium initial contract. I think it was intentionally high, maybe to demonstrate a renewed commitment to investing in the position after three more modest salaries in comparison to the rest of the league. But for whatever rationale, we offered an enormous initial salary, not only tripling the G5 coach's current compensation, but putting him alongside, albeit slightly behind, the three coaches who had already won national titles.

Call that second tier if you'd like, but it wasn't middle of the road.

Many are saying the same about Mr. Douchebag in Oxford. So let’s just shut the program down and concentrate on the other sports, here at the everything school.

It was a good salary no doubt but just nothing over the top. It de felt different right off the bat when we hired Urbs.

Don’t know much about “Mr Douchbag’s” personal life the last 10 years or so but it does seem he has become a better person or at least better at hiding his “douchiness”. I’ll reserve being judgmental until further notice.
What I DO KNOW is football is fun at Ole Miss right now and it most likely will be as long as he is there.
It’s anything but fun at UF right now in spite of having some marvelous talent on our team.

I don't think we really disagree much. After years of trying to get "bang for their buck," maybe the UAA should have paid a fraction more and went after a truly experienced home run hire and once again became a leader in the industry.

Hindsight tells us we terribly overpaid for Napier, but even in the moment, I don't think anyone would argue back in 2022 that we cheaped out on his contract. It was a big swing and there were even questions then whether it was more than necessary to secure his hire. As in not only would he have taken the job for less, for that kind of money maybe we could have hired a bigger name or more experienced winner.

I know it's kind of a weird, highly contextual bar to cross, but Napier's initial contract is still the biggest ever given for a coach without P5 head coaching experience. That means he was offered more money than any big time coordinator or hot midmajor coach ever. Still.

Yes, it wasn’t peanuts and it was a good contract and in hindsight, we definitely overpaid for him. I didn’t hate the hire at the time, but it was obviously a terrible choice. Everybody since Myer was a terrible choice and none of them were proven coaches. What two or $3 million extra per year to get somebody like Debourinstead of somebody like Napier . They’re still no guarantees, but it seems to me like a much better way to run a program

We’d rather have crappy football and nice coach.
