Close, about 1200 each the pervious 2 years, but if people added that context then no one would jump to conclusions that he just sucks and doesn't deserve to be paid.

Yeah, almost aligns with his claim he was verbally promised but never "finalized."

That post wasn’t Sluka specific. That’s NIL in general.

1200 yards on the ground is pretty damn sporty and may be worth a small paycheck. When the last time we had a 1200 yard runner.

Also, left out of your screenshot the 39 carries for 253 yeards, 6.5 ypc and a TD. More total yards, passing TD, same rushing TDs, and fewer INTs than Mertz through same amount of games. What a loser right?

If only we had a device that could record an agreement between two parties. We could call it, I don't know, a "contract." It would contain all the details of such an agreement. You might even have professionals that specialize in such things that the players could consult with, call them "agents" or something like that.

I have a hard time having sympathy for an adult expecting a large sum of money without an explicit contract in place detailing such a thing. I can't get past that part. Matters between family, maybe, but aside from that why wouldn't you ask for a contract before having a legitimate expectation? The agent should be raked over the coals for this. The dad should have known better as well. The kid has a right to do whatever he wants (even if that breaches some other contract, consequences not withstanding), but he's not a victim, and he deserves all the criticisms that come with the decision he is making.

Isn't it at all weird this would be precieved as the better course of action than helping lead the team to 3 wins while hoping for a resolution? Would he not be a quitter if he just didn't show up to practice?

Agree he should have insisted on a contract. Dumb or naive on his part and paying the price for it in the court of public opinion. Lesson learned, get one from the next school.

Highly doubt you have ridiculously stupid laws saying you can't be enticed to work where you do in exchange for money from a 3rd party. But no, I imagine you would not show up.

To me, it's a lack of communication on his part with the head coach (or presumably, any of his coaches). They likely wouldn't have invested in him to only play 3 games if they would have known his conditions. It's not like they beat any premium teams, either. The teams they have beaten are a combined 2-10 with a win over Lindenwood.

Invested is an interesting choice of words. A transfer QB in his last year of eligibility sounds more like a mercenary. And you know mercenaries...

He is in last season of eligibility and this college NIL will likely be his highest paying job for the next 20 years.

So I don’t mind him trying to maximize his value.

But it comes down to this. Did UNLV back out of a verbal agreement or is he trying to shake them down for more money?

If it’s the first he’s doing the right thing. If it’s the second he’s the scummiest dude on the planet and I hope nobody picks him up

Again with the "work for free" garbage. Prior to NIL a scholarship was a contract. Those were the terms signed on to play sports. In return they often got into a school they wouldn't have based on academics alone. Received elite training and coaching (unless you went to Florida lately), nutrition, tutoring, TV exposure all from a built in fan base from generations of alumni, fans and branding and then some.

Now the influx of TV money and the ridiculous coaching salaries has created a wealth gap that the players understandably feel is unfair. NIL should have always been legal. A player that generates the Fandom the way any number of players like Tebow, Harvin, spikes, etc etc should have always been able to profit from jersey sales, video game sales, and probably some percentage of TV money but the powers that be always knew it would be abused from the onset and just a roundabout way to pay for players. The boosters and bluebloods just can't help themselves.

None of that is endorsement for how things have been nor the way they currently are just that this notion of working for free is a hyperbolic lie of an argument. Is it fair right now? I don't know. But sports fans lose their minds over paying players "their worth" yet that doesn't translate to blue-collar workers who provide the services that bring in the revenue when they work for established companies that incur the costs of capital, liabilities, experience, reputation, etc etc. Football players are free to go start their own minor league and be their own bosses. Why hasn't that happened? Who pays when the product loses money?

As for "standardized payments " for position players? Again, laughable considering how many schools play football. So many variables involved in what a players monetary value is.
