Florida has told school districts around the state that they may not teach teenagers about contraception, show them pictures depicting human reproductive anatomy or discuss topics such as sexual consent and domestic violence, according to district officials and an advocate for comprehensive sexual health education.

As a result, Orange County Public Schools plans to scrap its own high school sex education plans and instead use a state-approved textbook that focuses on abstinence. The district’s now-abandoned plans, outlined in a nearly 600-page document it provided to the Orlando Sentinel, stress abstinence for teenagers but also provide information on how pregnancy occurs, the pros and cons of various birth control methods, what consent means and ways to handle pressure to be sexually active.

Welcome to 1980. What's next? Telling schools that they have to ban the teaching of the big bang theory?

Matt Gaetz doesn't like to wear condoms and is tired of the high school girls asking.

FL will be teaching intelligent design soon.

Desantis has been a huge disappointment.

Watching my beloved state descend further into madness.

It will absolutely take YEARS to undo the miseducation of Florida's students by way of recent mandates and curricula across a variety of subjects.

State officials have decided to thwart core education principles for political / idealogical reasons.

Abstinence-only sex ed programs are designed to limit information and inject a morality component.

Florida's elected and appointed officials are showing, time and again, they are not truly interested in educating our young people.

This is a good quote and imo the elephant in the living room. Maga doesn’t want to let schools teach teenagers about certain aspects of basic anatomy and maga alters books regarding Rosa Parks, but no concern about impacts phones have on teenagers.

“member of the Orange County School Board, said the state’s instructions mean students will glean information from their phones and their friends rather than reputable sources.”

This approach has proven to be very effective at increasing the number of unplanned pregnancies. Maybe that's what they want, more babies.

If a teenager accidentally gets pregnant or gets a girl pregnant, that’s on the teenagers and the parents, not the state of Florida or the public school system.

So leave it entirely up to parents who have zero qualifications to teach sex ed, like single moms with three or more kids, two jobs and little time to have serious conversations with their daughters? I think it's just as important for teens to learn about consent than contraception. You want to leave it up to Dad to tell his son that no means no?

It doesn’t take many credentials to teach a kid how to use a condom.

I also don’t think most rapes happen because of “lack of education.” They happen because of bad character.

I went to HS in conservative NW Florida in the 90's, and I remember the teacher showing us a live birth video in Anatomy & Physiology. Anybody who thinks that sort of information will make teenagers more frisky than they would be otherwise probably hasn't seen one of those videos.

In the end if teenagers act irresponsibility and being teenagers at least of some of them will the blame ultimately lies with them. On the other hand maybe they would be less likely to act irresponsibly if they received comprehensive sex education in public schools. Reducing out of wedlock pregnancies especially among teens is a rational goal and both comprehensive sex education and easy access to contraceptives go a long way towards achieving that goal and yet so called conservatives oppose both strategies.

Question: What do you call irresponsible teens who have received abstinence only sex education? Answer: Parents.

So dumb. If you are teaching about sex in high school then teach about contraception. DeSantis doing dumb shit seems par for the course.
