This keeps getting brought up here, and I started wondering, were there other things in the bill unrelated to the border that some congressmen might have objected to. So I found this on the PBS website: Total size: $118.3 billion. That includes: About $60 billion in military aid for Ukraine $14.1 billion in aid for Israel $4.83 billion in aid for the Indo-Pacific region $10 billion in humanitarian assistance for Ukraine, Israel, Gaza, among other places $2.3 billion in refugee assistance inside the U.S. $20.2 billion for improvements to U.S. border security $2.72 billion for domestic uranium enrichment What’s in the Senate’s sweeping $118 billion immigration and foreign aid bill? Wow! Over $90 billion worth of spending that has nothing to do with the border or immigration. I really wish congressional bills were required to stick to one topic. If someone opposed Ukraine aid and voted no, they get tagged as shooting down the border bill. Personally, I’m glad we support Ukraine and Israel, and I like most of the border provisions in the bill. But I wish Congress had to separate these things into different bills so we know exactly what’s being voted on.
Interesting find. Thanks. We share that wish. Are you talking about the most recent one or the one which the Freedom Caucus scuttled in '13? In any event, who knows if the most recent one would have passed but for Trump coming out specifically against the boarder portions of the bill? (I didn't hear him say that, BTW, but it seems to be accepted as a fact that he did.) One thing is clear: with respect to immigration reform, while we all agree it's necessaey, no matter what one side proposes, the other side will object, and collegial compromise is a thing of the past. I'd like to see the majority and minority leader in the Senate each pick a member; the Speaker pick two; and all four pick a fifth to form a committee of five to come up with a bill dealing only with immigration reform.
Harris a month ago…… “After decades in law enforcement, I know the importance of safety and security, especially at our border. I will bring back the bipartisan border security bill that he killed and I will sign it into law.” The border bill she would sign…… WSJ: “By any honest reckoning, this is the most restrictive migrant legislation in decades. Previous immigration talks have involved trading security measures for legalizing more immigration. There is little of the latter in this bill—nothing for nearly all of the Dreamers who were brought here illegally as children, no general pathway to citizenship or green cards for most illegal immigrants already in the U.S. “ https://www.wsj.com/articles/senate...6egk1g34p19nlux&reflink=article_copyURL_share Murphy says GOP voted against border bill to keep border ‘chaotic,’ help Trump campaign "A “border deal that actually reduced the flow of illegalimmigration, that would be good for [President Biden] politically.” That is Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.), giving away the GOP’s cynical game on fixing the border. Cramer said this without a hint of shame in explaining his opposition to immigration reform." No, because President Trump was able to get border crossings down to record lows by the time he left office. We don't blame Urban Meyer for Billy Napier's failure do we?
We've been over this a million times. Trump had border crossings down to record lows by 2020. Joe Biden Day 1 in office terminated tons of Trump border policy. Joe Biden to pause border wall construction, issue protections for DACA recipients and roll back other Trump immigration policies Border crossings skyrocketed under Biden's lack of leadership. He did not need a bill from Congress. Trump did not sabotage anything. If Biden had simply kept in place Trump's border policy, we would not have had this crisis in the first place.
To answer your question : one is to adamantly eschew lying and race-baiting as the primary communication and main form of public discourse from appx half our political body. It's that simple. There are thresholds of decency which must be maintained. (One could add criminally trying to overturn an election.) You are clearly highly intelligent, well-intentioned, and highly empathetic. But empathy is not the answer to every situation. Personal integrity and decency occasionally is. Trump voters turning a blind eye to the racist race-baiting of "They're eating dogs" and pivoting to a demand for civil discourse is just more of the parasitic hypocrisy we see from their leaders. They abuse the laws, the norms of decency, and our social compact to take all they can, then run and claim protection of fair treatment from the very institutions they actively support the destruction of. Sorry, but it's not acceptable, and accountability is what is called for, not empathy.
It keeps getting brought up, because GOP leaning posters keep taking the bait. No offense intended, @phatGator. Border crossings were way down with Trump. Biden ended several key Trump border policies on day 1. This has nothing to do with a bill that wasn't signed. Trump had it fixed. Biden broke it. End of story.
Just one question. How many terrorist attacks or even attempted terrorist attacks have been committed by "terrorists" who illegally crossed the Southern border? Just asking. Personally, I'm much more worried about terrorist attacks by persons influenced by false narratives on the internet or by what they have heard on television by right-wing infotainers including the defeated former president than I am about acts of terrorism committed by undocumented individuals who may have crossed the Southern border. In fact, illegals who entered the US legally and over stayed their visas represent more of threat than those who entered through the Southern border.
To date, zero successful terror attacks from persons who crossed into the US illegally from Mexico. Only two ever arrests from this group. And they are two people who entered as children and were radicalized later in life. As for the claim Trump kept illegal border crossings down, who was POTUS again in 2019? Yes, there was a drop in 2020, but that was due to the pandemic. In 2021 and 2022, much of the immigrant traffic that was help up at the border because of Title 42 stopped waiting and started crossing, which is one of the reasons there was a spike. No pandemic and 2020 would have had more encounters than 2019, and the two subsequent years not as big.
Yeah okay, if someone was here legally and they pulled it off would it be harder or easier to pull off an attack if they were here “illegally” ie we didn’t even know they were here?
Your memory is slipping, too. A certain Speaker of the House was insisting that certain matters be handled in one package...until he wasn't.
He is giving Trump credit for the world shutting down for Covid. Our border numbers are on pace to be lower that 2019, the last full year before Covid. Another thing not mentioned much by certain parties is that our border numbers are directly affected by events in other countries. This is especially true of Mexico’s enforcement efforts, but also includes Central American countries that Trump cut hundreds of million in funding to combat hunger and crime, factors that drive people in those countries to immigrate to the US.
You miss the point entirely. You didn’t even address Trump and his minions obstructing an attempt to solve the problem. You just want to blame Biden. You also ignore AzCatFan’s chart. You post constantly, and I’ve yet to see any kind of balance in them.
Nah but we blame Mullen for BN failures, well at least we did until this year. Yeah off topic. I know
I didn’t miss anything. How can Trump and his minions be blamed for obstructing an attempt to solve a problem they had already solved? Biden recreated the problem, not Trump. And just as easily as Biden undid all of Trump’s immigration policy on Day 1 by executive order, he could have just as easily reinstated by executive order. The CIC doesn’t need a private citizen’s blessing to secure our national border. I’m sorry you’ve actually been duped into believing that.
Already solved? Please explain how there were more crossings in 2019 than 2017 and 2018, three years into Trump's administration? Does this look like solving? 2020 was lower, but that was due to COVID. Really think 2020 wouldn't have been higher than 2019 with no pandemic?
Wow... what a thread... Nice try @GatorRade but some folks are just too stuck in their belief system and demonizing of the other side to realize that they are just humans making decisions that they think it best for their family and well being.
You aren't stupid enough to believe people stopped trying to sneak across the border in 2020 because of Covid. You're cheerleading. The bottom line is Biden undid all of the Trump border policy on Day 1 of his administration and we saw record never-seen-before spikes in illegal border crossings as a result. Trump didn't do that and shouldn't be blamed for any part of it. Our president Joe Biden (Mr. 6 Handicap) killed all of Trump's border policy on Day 1 and created the worst border crisis in our history. (AINEC) He could have put all of the border restrictions back on that he did away with on Day 1 of his administration.
