Having the ball in WC Jr.'s hands at the close-out of games is not a bad thing; he's one of the best free-throw shooters in the country.
Walter is the guy you want at the line in a fouling situation. It’s the pressing & trapping defenses that I hope he’s better against
He did struggle with this. Good thing is it’s fixable. Hopefully, they will emphasize working on it in practice.
Murphree, that’s what I’m hoping for. From an overall schedule perspective, I’m sure Walter will be fine. It’s those handful of close games were the defense is pressuring the ball, trapping & jumping passing lanes that I hope Walter can be effective as a PG.
From all I read, CTG is planning on running an offense that doesn't really require a traditional point guard. Basically, three shooting guards and two bigs. Walt will be the "point" in that he'll initiate it but will be expected to shoot, drive, and score just as much (probably more) than the other two guards. As a changeup pitch, Aberdeen will come in off the bench and run the O more as a true point guard. We've got a bunch of different looks to throw at opponents. How 'bout the All-Foreign Five? PG Kublickas, SG Klavzar, SF Condo, PF Chinyelu, and C Rioux. We can play "The Immigrant Song" when that group takes the floor.
Going to be a fun year. Don't see a team we can't beat if we are playing well. This team will be a top 10 team by end of year. Who do you see better in SEC?
Though some players are better off the ball than on ball, and playing PG is a different responsibility than playing SG, so he’s going to have to learn how to juggle it all. Good thing Golden is going with a less traditional system so he won’t hace to orchestrate the offense as much as with a traditional PG role
He played PG all through high school. He wasn’t an off ball player until Iona. He knows the position. But that wasn’t really the discussion… it was whether playing point would affect his scoring and I said it shouldn’t impact him. If anything, it should enable him to score more points.
All depends on the system and what is expected of the one. Sounds like Golden wants to double down on the pace/early offense and continuity ball screen actions. I also think Condon may turn into an effective high post pivot for our Princeton stuff. In those cases, the demands of ball distribution and running the offense in the half court will be significantly reduced from some of the spread ball screen or dribble drive offenses we’ve run in the past here (or even the version of the continuity offense we ran last year with Pullin). That should free him up to look for his own offense even if he is playing the point.
I mean... yeah... if a coach designed a system which forced the point guard to score less I suppose that would be correct, however I'm not aware of any such systems. I've played a long time for many teams and watched a lot of basketball. I don't know of any coach or system that purposely throttles back a scoring point guard's ability to score. Usually if a PG is a good scorer, they are going to score. The ones who don't score as much typically don't have the capability.
You said it depends on the system, which implies that some coaches run systems that limit PG scoring.
