I can get behind this type of targeted warfare.

More than likely #2. The Shin Bet has a history of doing this type of operation. In 1996, they switched out a phone that a Hamas bomb maker with one they put a shape charge into and set it off when he they called it.

Phone Bomb Kills Terrorist Yahya Ayyash | CIE

I would assume that the Mossad/Shin Bet developed some intel on who the supplier of the pagers were and then they either acquired the business or interdicted a shipment and replaced the real ones with the explosive laden ones.

Yep. It is brilliant. It even directly exposed the Iranian connection since some of their “diplomats” were injured by the exploding pagers. Brilliant.

Well I guess you will have to since we are all carrying around devices which a government can apparently make explode

#1 would be one hell of a zero-day exploit. I suspect #2 is far more likely...

This is exactly why we will always be in their camp. They're very good and our defense industries/departments work together closely. Whatever you think about this mess, this isn't changing anytime soon.

Also, total Barksdale Gang move with the pagers.

It was though. There's no denying it. Hezbollah must be fans of The Wire (pagers). Who knew McNulty was a member of Mossad.

I mean so was flying airplanes into a building using them as bombs, didnt see many folks back slap each other over past innovations in terror. But I'm not on those forums I guess.

To be honest, it was. Though the count of innocent victims would be the most stark difference, right? And, of course, the targets themselves. One was deliberately targeting civilians with the motive of creating as much shock and horror possible (Sound familiar? It should). The other was Israel attacking an admitted enemy.

If there is some kind of electronics exploit that can allow people just to explode phones or pagers that seems bad, since most of the world carries some kind of device around.

It was pagers and if you read the post upthread, they probably knew who made them and intercepted them prior to delivery to the terrorists. This wasn't ham handed.

But I get it. That's definitely concerning on a larger level.

If they just rigged them with explosives that's less interesting. But pagers and phones all have lithium ion batteries. If they can be made to combust seems like it wouldnt matter phone vs. pager.

Do pagers? I seem to remember having to put a battery in mine back in the day. Are these modern pagers or just recycled old tech? If they were using them to avoid detection, I guessing the old tech.

But yes, if that's now a thing, it's a bit concerning. My guess though is that modern cell phones are pretty safe from this. If not, time to short Samsung and Apple stock.

I havent read a ton about it, but it seemed like they were newish and manufactured in the Philippines or something, not busted ass pagers from 1994

Here's a pretty good discussion about it. No real conclusions though.
