I think you are just being a little nostalgic. In the 70s/80s sexual abuse was routinely brushed under the rug, whether it was a family member or trusted adult. There was way more recreational sex and drug use by kids too. By the late 80s everything was about DARE, MADD, stranger danger, safe sex, etc. Like it was literally programmed into people because so much shit was going down previously!

 

I think it is well documented, ANY human beings in ANY position of authority can and will abuse that authority.

I personally believe that most police officers tend to obey the rules. I also think the public makes the authorities job difficult to
the point of impossible. I agree with 515151 on this point. I am grateful for video cams, I think it has significantly cut down
on police abuse, expecially in regions of the deep south, LA, Chicago, Philly and other areas where policing was not exactly "fair".

 

I'm not sure how anyone living in Florida and paying attention to what DeSantis is doing (attempting to control what companies say to their employees during training, for example) can claim that giving more power to the government is just a liberal thing.

But if you're saying that these events caused parents to think that everywhere their kid goes they are susceptible to being molested or kidnapped then it makes sense. Kind of a big price to pay for treating our teachers like shit though.
Paranoia and trust are at opposite ends of this spectrum.

 

Just saying we have become a "see something, say something" culture now, where it wasn't before. Its not just one way either, teachers are expected so surveil the students to. And now we have so many ways to monitor people too, which is much different than 40 years ago. And certainly, things like the "War on Terror," "zero tolerance" policies and school shootings have played into the sort of paranoia produced by a surveillance society in schools.

 

No, of course not. But the immediate power over life, freedom and liberty, are understandably more impactful. Often those decisions are not reversible like they are in other areas. If this is a call to turn down the scrutiny on police then I am not in favor. If it is asking for more scrutiny on the inner machinations of government in general then I am for it.
