If we hide Napier threads on too hot will they find them?

To me, the whole sports economy(not just college football) has looked like an economic bubble for over a decade. How much can prices for coaches, players, tickets, etc. keep going up before it starts cutting into demand? Specific to college football, how long before fans of the have nots check out for the most part? Can the industry survive at it's current levels if they do? For that matter, I'm not sure it's ever happened but I suspect that sustained dominance over a long period could even erode the fanbases of the haves.

 

Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens, the author of Tom Sawyer & Huckleberry Finn) had a system (in the 1880's and 1890's) for his friends who were unemployed and desperate to be given a chance at a job in a particular profession. He told them they had to follow the system exactly for it to work. They were to go to the manager of the business they were interested in, and tell him that they cannot stand being idle, and would like to do any tasks that the business had for him, and he would not accept a salary for it. He was given things to do. He had to do everything asked of them to the best of his ability and without complaint, and without asking for compensation. Eventually, a competitor (or supplier or customer) of the business would wander in, seeing him working as hard as possible, and hear from someone in the company that this person is working without pay (which was and is a novelty of sorts), and then he would offer him a job. The person is to ask for that job offer in writing, and then show it to his boss to give him a chance to match it or he would have to take it. It never failed to produce results.

The UF coaching carousel is the exact opposite of this method of finding successful employment. Pay me now AND pay me later, and you'll get to see if I'm any good or not. I will spend a fair amount of time in a dreamlike state thinking about the tens of millions of dollars that I'm getting, but don't you worry about that. I'm going to sell you on your dream, while I am focused on my dream of having tens of millions of dollars. I mean, winning national championships.
