Maybe Vance could talk about that except he has nothing to offer for that. Racism and scape goating he can offer though! That's all right-wing capitalists can offer, because they sure as shit arent going to make city services or housing plentiful. That doesnt make his donors rich, it costs them money!
No, that’s population growth. Economic growth requires an increase in economic activity. How else do you think they got there? Do you think Haitians gathered together in Haiti and said let’s all migrate to Springfield, Ohio? Springfield is not a boomtown. A boomtown attracts people because of an increase in economic opportunity. That is not what is happening in Springfield. They are merely increasing the population without a concomitant increase an economic activity.
@citygator and @AzCatFan: what specifically do you find funny in my post? Do you laugh at a small town whose city services and education and healthcare systems are being stretched to the bursting point? These problems are there result of policies both of you have adamantly supported. Why aren’t you at least empathetic to these problems, rather than laughing at them?
There is economic growth in Springfield. The influx of eager workers has revitalized the community. Amazon Haitians didn’t gather together with a specific plan to migrate to Springfield, Ohio, but migration patterns often happen through networks of family, friends, and communities. Once a few people find opportunities in a place like Springfield, word spreads, and others follow in search of economic stability and a better life. It’s less about planning and more about opportunities that grow over time in specific areas. Think the "Great Migration" where African Americans from the south migrated to northern cities like Detroit to support the auto industry. Substantiate the concomitant comment. Springfield is the second largest growing metro area of its size in the US. Here is an article from a couple of years ago: Springfield resurgence: Area poised for lasting growth
The population of cities like Springfield, OH has been dropping over the last few decades. From over 70,000 in 1990 to currently about 58,000. Immigrants are one way for a city to grow, and if you ask the businesses of Springfield and surrounding area, would they rather have immigrants with jobs that can spend money in their stores or nobody, they will take the immigrants. Immigrants also disproportionally make up a percentage of construction work force in most areas. So if the issue is one of housing, start some building projects. Same with infrastructure. Make the town an even better place to live and not only will more immigrants come, but so will citizens. In Chinese philosophy, opportunity often comes from crisis. Many cities in the Midwest would love population growth. Don't whine about it. Instead, make the most of it.
I had a friend growing up that lived in a neighborhood with Muscovy ducks. An Asian family moved in and slowly the ducks started disappearing.
Right wing nonsense 101: This tale of pet eating came from provocateur Jack Posobiec's burner account, totally made up. Then other right wing accounts picked it up as, "There are reports of..." and off they went.
Would be funny if it weren’t grounded in racism and xenophobia. I wonder what the tagline would be if 12,000 Canadians moved to Springfield? Probably: “Springfield, Canada’s #1 destination!”
The Ohio Attorney General said the problem is not migrants, rather the problem is such a rapid influx of migrants over such a short period of time. That has created the issues of overstretched services. You can laugh at the problems all you want, but they are real for the people who have to deal with them.
It would depend upon whether or not the Canadians bring their own resources or would they be destitute and rely entirely upon the city and county to provide for them. Would their children need translators in school and help with English as a second language? Maybe a Quebecois, but not most Canadians. Would they be able to procure their own housing or would the county have to help them out? You’ve taken the easy way out and played the racism/xenophobia card, rather than address the real issues that immigration can bring to a community, even if the immigration is desirable.
Your analysis seems to presume full employment of the immigrants. That is not the case. Springfield has 5% unemployment, which is higher than the national average. Even if this in the long run is a good thing and the economy in the long run grows from it, these people need services now. Whining? I’m not whining about anything. I’m just pointing out the truth on the ground, which you want to explain away with a hypothetical view of the future. Would you stand face-to-face with the elected officials of Springfield city and Clark county and call them whiners? Chinese platitudes don’t feed people. Chinese platitudes don’t educate children. Chinese platitudes don’t provide medical care. As I recall you saying in the past, have some empathy, man.
