How Does Billy Save His Job?

Remains to be seen how good miami is. But even if they are a playoff team, Napier has us nowhere near that level. Cristobal demonstrated better talent evaluation, results of winning recruiting battles, ingenuity, what appeared to be a well trained team. We are nowhere near that. Samford is a tiny school and perhaps a handful of their players are SEC level. We were supposed to beat them easily. Not sure how the game would have gone if our opponent was one of the decent>good SEC teams on our schedule.

CBN has run a clean program and I think has recruited very well and brought some talent to the roster through the portal. I’ve been a cheerleader for him from the get/go, but it is time, past time to start showing real results on the field. That’s what counts.
The Miami game really put a damper on CBN’s future. If he is going to have a future at UF the team needs to play with urgency and our coaches, all of them, need to show that same sense of urgency. I wouldn’t mind seeing a visor or hat flying around on the sideline or a coach getting bent out of shape for a stupid mistake.

 

What’s his incentive to stick around? If he doesn’t play DJ, full time, I question his desire to even do so. How did we end up in a position where he could get fired tomorrow and leave with the second biggest buy out ever???

I heard some pundit say that if he saves his job, forgetting bonuses and stuff which he would get by doing the things he has to do to save it but would only be 15% more. Basic investment would earn him more than that.

 

Ultimately we don't disagree at the core of your point (so far), but regardless of what Miami does, we were not expected to have a winning season this year. That is the reality. Why when/if it comes to fruition would people act like the world is coming to and end and we need to go 'scorched earth' to make a point? Again, that is the reality no matter how much of the preseason sugar we consume. Sucks.

 

He would have to go against everything he has shown to be as a coach thus far at UF.

Offense: OL keeps our QBs upright and opens holes consistently. Uses the top tier speed he has recruited at WR by going 01 or 00 personnel consistently. Lagway is QB1 and 1a.

Drfense: Front 7 sets edge, maintains gap integrity, and even gets a pash rush every now and again. Safety play shows marked improvement. CB opposite Marshall starts balling out.

General: A whole game without a 15 yard personal foul. No wasted timeouts. Tempo faster than the tides. Emotion. Looks physically matched, not even needing to be superior.

I've long since sold my Napier stock, just waiting for what I believe is inevitable actually gets set in motion.

 

He was expected to have a losing season because of he and his staff. Yes, we play some good teams, but he's supposed to have made his team somewhat equal to the rest of the field. The Vegas line is a vote of no confidence.

 

I don't even accept the premise of this thread. I had a disproportionate patience for what was being built in the first 2 years of Napier.

The first game was enough to show again who Napier is. After 3 years he loses to teams with comparable or better talent and often those with less talent. After 6 years he will still be a coach who has a ceiling of the 6th or 7th best team in the conference.

Should a coach like that save their job because the competition is not as good as we thought it would be and because we have a generational talent in Lagway to get us to 6 wins? That's not Gator football. If we have a generational talent at QB, we win championships, not participation ribbons.

This same schedule, flipped for next year, will be more challenging, and we will have a worse record next year than this year if CBN remains, and we will likely have lost the interest of great coaches who are available this year. We know and all our competition knows he is dead man walking. I would love to see many more wins this year, but I am far more concerned about the future of Florida football and what CBN is doing to it.

 

Just because Vegas knows we are going to suck in year three does not mean we should accept that and keep paying this guy. When you cannot show improvement in year three, your job is over.

 

Of course. They don’t accept losing. Winning is hard to do but you have to expect and strive to win. Maybe in 26 we can whoop those puppies asses. I’m not too naive to know that we aren’t even close and next year is too much to ask. If it’s going to happen though, we must have a developed DJ.

 

I totally agree but what great coaches are available this year. That’s always the difficult part. And if Kiffen( just as an example) is that guy, it’s not like he doesn’t have options. We can’t make him come here and Wing made a good point that maybe he goes the nfl route. I damn sure would if I was in his shoes. I prefer the college game and don’t even watch the nfl anymore but it’s a way easier gig.

 

He gets a huge salary in college, and way, way more job security in college than NFL. Harbaugh had to be pushed out to go to the NFL. Riley may be in play also. That would save us Lagway too. Depending on what Fisch does this year he may be a huge upgrade from CBN. I believe he is a better Xs and Os guy than Napier, and that is important in this NIL time.

 

He has job security at Ole Miss too. If he comes to Florida and sucks the first game his third year though he is fired and his image is tainted. That’s why all these up-and-coming coaches demand a big payday because it’s either results or take your ass back to the baby conference. Kiff is there right now but he is already made some money. he may want that big contract, but if I were him, money would not be my first priority. Everybody will give him money. The only reason I would move if I were him is because I want to win a national championship and been seen in that light. The NFL is a lot less work, but it’s also harder to stack talent. All those guys are good at xs and os. You’re not gonna scheme your way around the NFL.

 

I think Kiffin's contract is already quite a bit better than Billy's.

 

Apparently you didn’t read my previous post but…..6-6 and a bowl game is still worthy of firing and kicking CBN to the curb? I’m just asking because that is improvement but still a stretch.

 

I was one who supported 6-6 and keeping his job. Now I don’t see him being able to do it. I’ve also said it’s not a math problem… 6 or 8 wins. There’s hasn’t been progress. I watched and saw the same shit.

I fairly certain it already did. The product that was put on the field for Miami was unacceptable for year three. It just should be better if you’re that guy.

 

Hard to make a case to keep him at this point. Hasn't been able to put together a winning staff. He's at least made changes on the defensive side and maybe RR/AA will figure it out but it's just taken too long. On O Rob Sale still has a job and we can't field a solid OL. I'm not one of the "muh air raid" types but regardless of what you think about scheme we should be executing whatever our chosen scheme is at a higher level by now.

 

I certainly expected more so I understand the sentiment, I’m just not there yet.
