Remember when Democrats (and everybody else) thought Kamala Harris was a bad vice president?

But it wasn’t too long ago that many Democratic insiders, and many in the party in general, considered Harris a failure at the job of vice president. Their unhappiness with Harris, which started with disappointment and evolved into something stronger, spilled into media reports and the general political conversation. There was broad agreement that Harris had just not been a very good pick for the nation’s second-highest position.

In February 2023, the New York Times published an article titled, “Kamala Harris Is Trying to Define Her Vice Presidency. Even Her Allies Are Tired of Waiting.” The headline was generous, given what followed. “The painful reality for Ms. Harris is that in private conversations over the last few months, dozens of Democrats in the White House, on Capitol Hill, and around the nation … said [Harris] had not risen to the challenge of proving herself as a future leader of the party, much less the country,” the New York Timesreported. “Even some Democrats whom her own advisers referred reporters to for supportive quotes confided privately that they had lost hope in her.”

Given all that, the New York Times reported that “a quiet panic” had “set in among key Democrats about what would happen if President Biden opted not to run for a second term.” Harris made the situation even worse by retreating to “a bunker” for about a year, the New York Times said, “after her disastrous interview with Lester Holt of NBC News.”

Yep, reasonably objective people who pay any attention to US politics remember this very well. Even the lefties remember this but there is no way they will admit it.

I don't want Trump to spend a lot of time on this, but it'd be great if he could weave it into a one-liner tomorrow evening. The thing is, most voters don't pay any attention to US politics and they don't understand that all the hype is a facade. They don't understand many prominent Dems were ready to dump her 3 months ago. And it wasn't a personality problem. It was her being especially bad at her job. He could confront her on it: "Kamala, just 3 months ago, many of your people wanted you gone. Now you're the queen bee. How did this happen?"

Nice try, but that's not even close to the same scenario. It's not a question of whether she can beat a perception ala Bush. It's that she didn't do anything to beat that perception in the first place. They were ready to dump her until Biden was exposed and then did a 180 overnight casting her as the best thing since sliced bread. If she had done something demonstrable over a period of time to beat that perception, you might have a point. That didn't happen though.. clearly. But, you knew this...

I cannot fathom the lack of capacity of the individual with whom you are having this discussion. What you have stated is patently true and should be obvious to any individual capable of flipping a light switch.

How can anyone really be a bad VP? The job is basically to do nothing lol. You don't have any real power. She probably was a little more active in that she got to cast some Senate votes to break a tie, but other than that?

I remember thinking she wasn't any better or worse than any VP in history ... I'm very thankful she was able to cast all those tie breaker votes in the Senate back it was tied.

Agreed. It's a relatively straightforward job description - maintain physical distance from the President, and DON'T DIE. Oh, and every once in a blue moon, cast a tiebreaking vote.

Truth be told, I thought Biden was more damaging to her than vice versa. And I'm pretty sure she wasnt Biden's ideal VP either. They basically sidelined her and gave her unpopular busy work, like "hey talk about the border so I dont have too." She was told to eat shit and did it, so basically standard VP stuff.

Sure, which is why so many Dems were fixated on it before Biden went down in flames. Because it’s a meaningless job. Can’t make it up….

I love in all these threads no one names any actual people. "So many Dems" is doing a lot of work here. I would venture for the vast majority of people in the USA, months went by without them thinking of Kamala Harris as VP. I think in my entire life, Dick Cheney was the only really talked about VP for anything other than comedy purposes.

It’s mostly TDS. He’s a smart enough guy, but once the TDS kicks in, he feels compelled to regurgitate flawed reasoning.

You can think Harris was a bad vice president but also choose to vote for Harris over Trump. Trump has bad favorable ratings also, but many of us are stuck with the choices we have.
