Do you think getting passed on the depth chart makes this kids behavior acceptable?

    Yes to the last part.

    Ok, to the first sentence.

But how is a student's mental health, the university's problem?

    Everybody's got their crazy.

The difference bt the functional and the breakdowns ("menty B's" as the kids csll it these days), is, as it has ALWAYS BEEN, containing your crazy.

It is incumbent on university students to contain their crazy.

That's kinda what that paper on your wall says. It says you controlled (or concealed) your crazy AND performed satisfactorily.

That's half the value of college paper. That's what "educated" means. That's the part you can't get from Googling info on the net, or home schooling.

The part that tells employers that they can trust this person to conduct him or herself like a civilized human being if they take em in, bc they've been battle tested, performed, and kept their shit together in the process.

Every university has a mental health clinic, some geared especially for students. It wouldn't be too difficult to guide him to those who can help him to see if he has issues that are can be a danger to him or others. We are freaking paying for top surgeons and trainers. Giving a kid free counseling is a drop in the bucket. I'll bet you anything mental health is also covered in those football scholarships to some degree.

Mental health is not a monolith that people (esp. those facing depression) can just contain.

And is afforded the utmost discretion. For. A. Reason.

    Use it if you must.

Don't advertise the fact that you do.

It's not some new phenomenon. It's a part of life. Of humanity.

Question--counseling for suicide is far more open and prevalent than before. Oughtnt that translate into decreasing suicide rates?

    Alas, it has not. See

Why Are Suicide Rates Increasing in the United States? Towards a Multilevel Reimagination of Suicide Prevention).

Turns out bottling that shit up, manning up, owning and containing your crazy, as Man has done for time immemorial, appears to be more effective at staving off suicide (and I would submit, controlling one's overall mental health...), than hand holding, real men cry/cry it out, sensitivity training and harnessing.

It's almost like our ancestors weren't stupid or something...

I suppose it's better to not control your crazy, and just go and shoot ppl up...

...and let's be sure to put your sessions with your shrink, loud n proud, on your reseme/CV.

...make sure any potential employers know good n well that you're battshit, but it's ok....you got your bats nice n caged up...
