Only if he can bring his schedule.

I think Napier could have a winning record with his schedule this year. (Optimistic I know)

Your stats seem to disprove your point as there’s a direct negative correlation between a good offense and a bad defense when looking at Muschamp’s teams’ stats.

I never said a ball control offense was playing not to lose. I’m saying Muschamp was playing not to lose and he overvalues TOP. My theory is as a defensive coach, he valued it because it kept his defense fresh and made his defensive stats look better than they really are. He wasn’t coaching to win the game.

On the flip side here is Mike Leach…
“A stat that is nearly useless is time of possession.”

    Also Mike Leach…
“People that value time of possession, they just sit behind the center and pretend they are gonna tickle his ass, and maybe they are and maybe they’re not and just wait for the clock to tick by. You’re just pretending you’re a smart football coach if you’re doing that. If what you do in practice has any value whatsoever, you’d probably be focused on executing plays.

Dramatically looking around in space and going towards the center and away from the center and pretending somehow you’ve revolutionized something smart, to me, it’s entirely idiotic.”

You can compare records and debate merits of TOP all you want, but the fact is one is beloved at 3 schools where he turned their programs into winners while the other got chased off of two schools where he turned winners into losers.

Billy really wanted the LSU job. And from what I hear Kiffin really wanted the UF job. Not sure where they are today, though.

Unfortunately for us, Billy is here, and Kiffin is at Ole Miss. Nov 23rd will be a very interesting day.

The point I'd that the tools are there; the personell is there (sans the OC).

Scheming, play calling, positioning... that's primarily what's missing--is what I'm talking about as a "pilot".

The pieces are there though. This "plane" (team) CAN fly (win/compete).

...just not with this pilot (coach).

This sounds great, but do we really know whether Napier built any foundation that is sustainable? We believe he doesn’t know how to use the tools made available to him (like his over-bloated army). What gives you the confidence in the foundation he engineered?

Maybe an army of analysts and upgraded facilities count as "pieces", but I doubt it. Seems to me the next coach will have to start all over, bringing in his own army of analysts and most importantly overcoming a losing culture.

As the saying goes winners find a way to win and losers find a way to lose.

Not disagreeing with you, but Mumme and Leach had stronger offenses than SOS at Kentucky, yet had losing records. His offensive fireworks at TT and Wazoo were eye popping, but rarely did he win much. Leach's beloved status was due to his swagger, personality and humorous style, and we all miss that with his untimely death.

But I'll contend that the 2012 Gators had a stronger team than any of Leach's. Muschamp overvalued TOP, but the concept is hardly useless.

Fans love high powered offenses because it is entertaining, but defense wins championships.

TOP is not good defense. I think that’s the disconnect. TOP is TOP. Good defense is good defense.

Respectfully this is conjecture. If you don't have a pilot, you don't truly know if the plane will actually fly, or at least get us to where we want to go.

That might well be true. I was about to say and he’s a Midwesterner, but how many coaches have stayed where they grew up. Saban obviously didn’t. Meyer didn’t.

After two years at Washington, DeBoer looks like he was the best 2021 hire, but at the time, he had only been a FBS head coach for two years and his best record was 9-3 in the Mountain West.

Kelly and Riley were the two sure things, and they've both been good, but Lanning and DeBoer all have better records than those two, and Freeman has the same record. (with Lanning and Freeman being first time head coaches)

No guarantees when hiring a head coach. Harsin consistently had good teams in his 7 years at Boise State, but didn't even make it to the end of his first year at Auburn.

His head coaching record drops to 20–9. Fire the guy now! :D

Edit: I didn’t say hire him. I merely asked why he wasn’t in the conversation of possibilities.

Thanks for the kind words but credit to the guys on the GNFP. If CFB is moving to NFL, use what works in the NFL.
