I’m not smart enough to process this stuff - I really just want to win football, basketball, baseball games, all other sports UF competes in. The landscape of major sports has changed dramatically over recent years. I’d like to think UF’s college administration and athletic departments are 100% committed to successful programs in all regards, including winning championships - not sure that’s the case. The scholar athletes don’t sign on with Florida to finish in 8th place.
I hate everything about these ideas, but something has to change with the times. It is insane that UF administrators are still using a 2006 mentality in 2024. The Florida Gators are still a top 15 revenue generator based on the brand, and supposedly they are in the top 15 in terms of roster talent. A “corporate” structure like a mix of the one discussed by Seth Varnadore and James Di Virgilio is probably the right answer for modern “amateur” college football.
Big changes have already happened to college ball recently and even bigger changes are just around the corner, unfortunately. A full blown pro football college league is likely not far off. I would imagine the administrative structure will drastically change too.
I have a theory. AAU values all sports over just football and facilities over talent acquisition. It feels like we have the same issues as Auburn when it comes to red tape.
Can't just hire the best available coach, so we want to reinvent the entire system? NO... The easier solution is the best solution... get the best coach out there.
The comp would be European Football. Individual contracts between player and team & academies. Maybe even transfer fees if you could work it out. Just straight-up capitalism. Hell, they even pay and recruit the kids too.
But who is that and how would they be less of a dice roll than someone like BN was when we hired him? Unfortunately, UF (and the rest of the FL schools) isn't the job it once was. Not just due to the losing seasons, but the fact that being in Florida is no longer an advantage anymore. I checked last night. Only 6 of the top-20 players in the state stayed home in 2023 and I'd argue Georgia had as many as that alone. Part of the reason these jobs were so coveted was due to them having an advantage in recruiting FL talent. Well, that's f-ing gone!!! And with NIL/Transfer Portal, I don't see it getting better either. So, I guess it comes down to, who can we realistically get? Obviously, we're going to get somebody, but I don't see UF having the choices it had in the past.
If you simply tune out the noise from other fan bases and the people that want a saint... the best coaches available are the ones that have been to the top, or very near the top. Saban and Kirby are not coming here no matter what, so what's left? By the way I would not want either one of those two, but they are proven winners... That means we have two that I know of that would be instant winners. You know their names.
Agree. Without the college Branding, the system collapses quicker than the usfl, et al. Which was the league where everyone was making 250-500K? Right now it is the wild west with the privateers pillaging and plundering.
And no structure or rules whatsoever. Say what you will, but the more I watch EPL, the more I like that system. Things like academies, for instance, could address the problem of all these kids leaving the state. Plus, you'd have all the youth teams and players to follow and track their progress. Seems like College Football sits in this purgatory place where it's trying to be both things (old college football vs. NFL minor league) and is failing at both. Say what you want about the NFL, but at least there are clear-cut rules in place re. salaries and player movement.

Compared to who? Most programs go through this at some point. Texas went through Strong and Herman, Auburn went thru Malzahn and Harsin, USC went through Kiffin, Orgeron, Helton and Sarkesion, A&M hasn’t had a good coach since Slocumb, etc. I think we are talking championships and when you measure it with that yardstick, there are only a few teams out there that have sustained success. Right now it’s only Bama, UGA, and Ohio State. We were lucky to hit lightning in a bottle twice with SOS and Urban.
Very well said. The sad part of it all is that the vast majority of these boys (yes boys, not men) will piss most, if not all of their NIL $ away (I know I would have) , not get an education, not grow up, and never see a dime from professional football. Many of those that are lucky enough to sign will not make any serious money and will get cut with the possibility of having later medical issues from concussions, to bad backs, knees, and ankles. It won’t happen because there’s too much money to be made but I wish there was an NFL farm system, and college football became college football again. And if this were to happen, let’s keep it out of the hands of the corrupetent NCAA.
One thing they do that I wish could be adopted to college football: 45min first half, no commercials. 15min halftime, with commercials. 45min second half, no commercials.
