It's not "mental health" vs. "gun control" - both aspects can be considered and analyzed. Some people may have more concern or interest in one aspect vs. the other. Some people may be interested in both. Under the "mental health" umbrella, I would include family dynamic, and family mental health. I don't think there's any upside to not making these families open books once we can logically identify a shooter (and yes, I understand that there's potential for ambiguity in this regard, but that has yet to be the case when it comes to school shootings). Not just on the mental health side, but on the gun ownership side and how they manage their firearms. How many do they have? How were they acquired (by shooter and by family)? Everything should be an open book once this happens.

Maybe these terms (in quotes above) aren't the best terms to use because they are already so loaded, but the mentality that goes into these things need to be explored more and that includes things like mental health, family dynamic, and any related matters. The same goes for incidences like this as it does for a teenager shooting somebody over a piece of jewelry.

I often wonder if it would be better to have multiple threads for these things. One for snarks and gotchas; one for expressions of empathy/sympathy; one for analysis of the event; one for ideas going forward.

How is a background check going to help when it is a 14 year old. The 14 year old can not legally buy a gun.

Maybe they are but plenty of the crazy shooters did not come from homes or parents that had a lot of guns or even lived in rural areas.

I hope you weren't being serious here. Of course a background check would be ineffective in a case like this with a 14 year old, but full background checks would prevent the sales of tens of thousands of firearms to people who have no business owning one.

Just another advocate for doing absolutely nothing about this issue. It makes those thoughts and prayers even more vapid.

Dude has demonstrated several times in these threads that he doesn't understand the concept of mitigation. In his mind, if the law cannot prevent every crime, it can't prevent any.

Maybe you should look at the post I was responding to. It is really easy to do as it is right there along with my response. If it is to hard for you to figure it out let me know and I will try and help you.

Allow the public to sue gun manufacturers when their product is used in a mass shooting and this problem will go away real quick.

Of course and sue car manufactures for people driving drunk or speeding and killing people.

More bickering, hemming and hawing and false equivalencies by the usual contingent, until the next “thoughts and prayers” special

AR-15s are actually quite popular as hunting rifles, especially where hogs are prevalent. They are modular, affordable semi-automatic rifles that are easy to work on, have parts widely available, and can easily be customized to your purpose.

I could certainly see an AR coming in handy hunting hogs. Those things are nasty tough. Wing one with your first shot with a bolt action and you could be on the receiving end of its tusks real fast.
