Do you really believe football players have changed so much in the last ten years? I don't.

Exactly what "experience" do you need to understand the portal, or NIL? It isn't rocket science; it's recruiting.

    Meyer understands recruiting.

I can. Not sure some can look past how he left his three previous jobs though.

Yes. The way you have to deal with these players and the way you have to recruit them has changed exponentially. I really don’t think Urban’s way of doing things would jive with today’s youth. It was a complete failure at the NFL level, and you’re dealing with the same kinds of things at this level now, except at this level your guys can just leave and go to another team if they don’t like your style. None of them have a contract that would restrict movement.

I think you’re drastically oversimplifying things. The portal and NIL have undoubtedly changed the way you recruit and the way you have to manage a team.

It’s not just about Urbs. I’ve never understood people’s fascination with wanting to hire retirees to coach at this level. The idea of Spurrier, Urbs, Stoops… or any other coach who hasn’t coached in this era roaming our sideline is unappealing to me. The game has changed.

Urban left OSU six years ago. The game, and the players, haven't changed much in six years.

And no one understood NIL and the portal until two years ago, if then.
It is not hard to figure out.

While I seriously doubt Urban comes back to UF, he would have no trouble with these things.

Everything has changed in the last 6 years. I don’t know how anyone who follows college sports can’t see that.

I can’t say he wouldn’t be successful anymore than you can say he would be. I can with 100% certainty say the game has changed insurmountably since he last coached in college though. It’s more similar to what he had to deal with in the NFL, and he did not deal so well with that.

I would be fine BUT there is no way he could do better than his first time around. But I want him back. He knows how to always play field position which Napier strays from and we know the results.

I'm not sure, but I think Meyer's extraordinary reputation as a winner wherever he goes at the college level may neutralize the changes with the Portal and NIL. As I see it, it is like Special Forces, Ranger or SEAL training and being in those units. You want out? Just ring the bell and we'll give you a good meal, some comfortable clothes, and PCS orders to a unit in the Army or Navy. Or perhaps like The Junction Boys, where Bryant offered a peanut butter sandwich and a bus ticket to go home. Most did that first season, but the reputation of being the best overcame the fear of brutality.

Meyer's reputation in the NFL was no different from Spurrier's, Saban's, Holtz, or any other great CFB coach attempting to make the transition to the NFL. Saban won a MNC at LSU, did rather poorly with the Dolphins, then returned to college to build his legend as the greatest head coach in CFB history.

A parallel argument of yours would be, "Who of any quality would want to be head coach at Florida? Since 2010, they have gone through five head coaches. The fans and especially the Bull Gators are ravenous and EXPECT not only wins, but championships and the things which build that elite status reserved for the likes of Alabama, Georgia, Clemson, Oklahoma and Ohio State. Their idea of mediocrity are 8-win seasons. The second guessing of you will never stop until you win a MNC. Until then, you will forever be compared to Spurrier or Meyer, a comparison you will lose -- unless you win MNC trophies."

If someone has to brought in at mid-season, why not Tim Tebow? People will say he has no coaching experience. Well, Napier has plenty of experience, and look what it got us. People will say we don't need another HC learning on the job. Well, Ron "I'm Not Steve Spurrier" Zook, Will "The Stare" Muschamp, and the Shark Molester weren't cut out to be HCs anyway. What did they learn on the job? I know it's not going to happen, but I like the idea. So as a second choice, how about Kerwin Bell? He would no doubt want to finish the season at Western Carolina, so someone on the present staff could be interim HC in the meantime. This season is going to be a disaster anyway.

NIL is a red herring. It didn't even become official until 2021 or whenever. What happened was in the early 2010s the top schools realized the NCAA needed the big money schools to be good more than they needed them to follow the rules and if they kept just enough layers of plausible deniability they could already start paying players no one would stop them. Clearly, one of the original ringleaders was Ohio State. Meyer could easily teach our boosters a thing or three he learned at OSU.

Urban is 60. Only 4 years older than saban when he was hired at Bama.

urban can coach for 8-10 years and make 100 mil, and completely right the ship. Go down as a better coach than spurrier for us if he brings up back - which is an absurd thought but actually possible. The state is rip for his picking…NIL era was made for him.

I don’t care who the next coach is as long as they cheat. The NCAA has no more power so Florida needs to stop acting like the rules matter. UGA players get DUIs on the reg and no on cares.

They may be having hiccups and holding their noses about now. Their way has sucked for almost two decades and “they” know it’s time to do something that works. No more nose in the air crap.
