Why is Napier's buyout $26 Million when Kiffen's is only $4 Million?

How does utter stupidity guarantee Stricklins job?

Fire his ass. Then sue him...

Stricklin not only needs to be fired for such stupidity, he needs to be keel hauled.

Who else signed off on giving an unproven coach such a ridiculous buyout? There had to be others. They all need to be kicked square in the ass and shown the door.

He was. The three years prior to Napier's arrival, they were:

    2015: 4-8
    2016: 6-7
    2017: 5-7

    Napier arrived:

    2018: 7-7
    2019: 11-3
    2020: 10-1
    2021: 13-1

    After Napier:

    2022: 6-7
    2023: 6-7

It wasn't all that different from Meyer coming from that Mountain West school...

It's dependent on what party is terminating the contract. To fire without cause we owe him 85% of remaining contract. If another school were to hire him (which is an absurdity at this point), and Napier terminates the contract he just has a flat fee to pay the school. It's only like 2 or 3 million for Napier to UF. Would imagine it is the same for Kiffin. What we would have to pay Ole Miss is likely a much much smaller number than what they would have to pay if they wanted to fire him.

Napier and Stricklin go hand in hand. You can’t fire Stricklin because Napier is sucking, while keeping Napier on staff a few more years si his buyout reduces significantly. Their fates are intertwined; once you have decided to can one you must can the other.

Stricklin knows this. So he made this deci$ion difficult for whoever decided to fire them both.

You’ve obviously handled a lot of d1 coaching searches and contract negotiations, so I’ll just assume you know what you’re talking about. Can’t wait to see the candidates lined up to sign with you when every other school out there is willing to give them a big, dumb, golden parachute contract. Why would anyone walk into this shit show without a contract that all but guarantees them security for 4-5 years?
We won’t have to worry about you hiring ANY d1 coaches. That much is certain.

You guys love to talk about being realistic. Your low base , heavily performance incentivized, no buyout contracts are a pipe dream in today’s environment.

Because the agents are much better negotiators and when coaches do well, they WE try and scruff off other suitors but which suitors and what has he done to get the buyout so high?

And ftr, the buyout is a specific clause in the contract that says “if we let you go early, we will pay out this (variable) amount” and depending on how deep into the negotiation, that number gets lower as you move on.

What he ever did here or anywhere else to earn such an elite number, I haven no idea.

What was the buyout at the beginning of Lane’s contract? Lane also had/has a considerable amount of baggage. He’s one of the few big name coaches that most teams didn’t want to touch with a ten foot pole. His situation was much different than most coaches making the jump from the mid majors to the big boys.

These contracts are structured this way because it’s how the coaches are guaranteeing their time to get things going. You’re going to give them 4-5 years to get their system in place or you’re going to pay them a shit ton of money to leave before that. If you’re not willing to give them that, they go somewhere else that will, or simply stay where they are. As long as anyone is giving out the big dumb contracts, everyone is.

What?? Ole Miss is loving Kiffin, especially given the mess he inherited.

Edited due to better info below.

    This was printed on 8/21/24.

Lane Kiffin buyout: See Ole Miss football coach's contract details

My understanding was buyouts for being fired are differently sums than for being poached.

The numbers may look similar, but Urban had actually beaten some major D1 schools, finished in the top 5, had better suitors (ND) giving a much better resume imo. To me, he was an easy slam dunk higher, Napier was always a gamble.

    Thanks, guess I misread.
It is an apples and oranges comparison as you say. If Lane were to be fired, not likely, it would be a lot more than $4M, which is what I was thinking.

Just for knowledge's sake, Jedd Hirsch's buyout at Washington is 5.5 million. And his agent is not Jimmy Sexton. I know I am singing his praises, but I like this guy the more I read about him. Not sold on Kiffin. In addition to his baggage, I think he will try the NFL again if an offer comes.

So all we need is for another school to poach Billy Napier and we are home free.

You failed to establish a nexus.

Spurrier was already coach for 3 seasons when we hired Jeremy Foley.

Mac was HC for 3 seasons when SS was hired.

In both cases, AD re-upped on the coaches there.

TBL-keeping or cutting SS has zero bearing on cutting/keeping BN.

Cut them both loose, and leave the next hire to the next AD (or appoint a committee and remove that from AD's scope of employment).

    Move forward...

I actually recall Foley saying that they had a selection committee (for Meyer I think) and that the days of the AD choosing the head coach were long gone.

How many coaching positions are available at a salary level UF is offering? How many professional coaches are making a fraction of that salary? Can't convince me no one is jumping at the opportunity to bet on themselves.
