I'm not completely sold on counting the MNC, as the AP and UPI were the standards at that time. That said, I FULLY support Florida's posting of the 84 and 85 Best in the SEC, as well as the 90 Gators. I still don't understand why they removed it.
The 84 team was not just the best in the SEC they were the 1984 SEC Champions and should be recognized as such.
Agreed and they were also the best team in the country. BYU was the final AP #1 and had to scramble to barely eke out a W over a 6-5 Michigan team in the Holiday Bowl....what a joke!
We had to win the SEC 4 times on the field before we were finally allowed to keep one title. 4 times!!! I swear, I was so paranoid as the '91 season wound down that something was going to ruin that too, and sure enough, there was talk of boycotting the Sugar Bowl because of David Duke running for governor of Louisiana. Fortunately, Duke lost and that went away before a decision needed to be made.
84 team was recognized by multiple sources. Bama has multiple BS national championships, and it's not even close to the same as ucf, since they themselves decided they were national champions.
Colley Matrix determined UCF to be the #1 team, it's known by the NCAA as a "major selector," it's literally in the NCAA record books. A technical title, and neither the fans nor the team celebrated winning a national championship in all its glory when it happened (they did have a celebration well after the fact, and it came off as contrived). We're above that. SWAC is recognized by major selectors for 1980 (FACT), 1987 (Berryman, Sagarin), 1989 (Billingsley), 1992 (Sagarin), 1994 (Dunkel). They don't count any of those, nor should they. The recognized national champions in those years were determined by the writers and the coaches. It's one thing to claim that FLORIDA was the best team that year, it's entirely something to claim that we were "national champions." Don't really care what Alabama or LSU or anybody else does. Just my opinion, but it's not something for FLORIDA to stoop to. We've seen players celebrate an actual national championship, and the fans alongside with them. It's just different. Deep down inside, we all know it (even the UCF fans). Go GATORS! ,WESGATORS
Commentary: Reinstate Gators' 1980s SEC titles and the legacy of coach Charley Pell If paying players is part of the game & back pay is happening, are the rules violations for payments still a violation?
I’m not a stats guy, but I thought the ‘84 team had some ridiculous percentage of converting in 3rd down situations, in the 70% range? I do remember, as we got later in the season that O-Line and RB imposed their will on defenses. Great, great memories of on-campus games & listening to away games on the radio. So many students were turning in, you heard the game on, everywhere.
So did A&M… Deadspin | Texas A&M Picked Up Two National Championships, Two Conference Titles Over The Summer
From the 1985 Media Guide review of 1984 "Florida converted on a very healthy 50% of its third down opportunities, On third down and 4 yards or less Florida converted at a 70.4% success rate"
The '84 Gators had the best triple-punch of running backs ever - Neal Anderson, John L. Williams, and Lorenzo Hampton. All 3 had productive pro careers. I hope they attend the celebration.
