Napier 'very pleased' with final scrimmage results as Gators prepare to turn to Miami

The defense is making progress and that's good news, I like it when there's more parity in practice between the offense and the defense. I see Ja'Keem Jackson is getting more reps as CB, means you know who might be dinged up...


After stressing the importance of intangibles in his team's first taste of game-like action this fall, football coach Billy Napier made it clear that Florida football's second and final preseason camp scrimmage would put the group's more tangible qualities on display.

Things that were previously under the microscope for the third-year Gator football coach such as "attitude, energy and focus" gave way to items like explosive passing, sound secondary play, tackling and pass protection.

The Gators on Saturday ran "about 160 plays total, counting offense, defense and kicking game," according to Napier, a workload that generally produced what he described as "back and forth" action, a result he was pleased with as the alternative, a more lopsided affair, could have set off alarm bells within the program.

Florida's secondary was, of course, responsible for the bulk of those turnovers. Safety Jordan Castell and cornerback Ja'Keem Jackson came away with interceptions against the Gators' first and second-team offensive units.

I hope all the stories and player testimonials are accurate about our defense... We need to see major improvements in several phases in that part of our game.

 

I think the "superlatives" being tossed around are there to appease the haters... and the people that might have given up on this coaching staff and team all together.

It seems like there is a new improvement to this team every other day, which is fine if it's true, but it is something that those aforementioned coaches never had to worry about because they had a sound coaching staff from the start. Better to fix it than not... but details of these practice/scrimmages should be elucidated in players making plays... not on fundamentals being learned and checked off a list.

 

7-0, yes... there, I said it!

 

I just want to see the fundamentals realized on the field.
