Ukraine's army is becoming very popular with the locals in Kursk, unlike Russia's armies in Ukraine. Apparently, Ukraine forgot to set up torture centers and start stealing appliances. Ukraine's military is supplying the locals with food, water, and medicine, and opening evacuation corridors for those that want to leave the paradise of New Ukraine and go to the hellhole of Russia. It's only a matter of time before the locals renounce their Russian heritage and declare themselves Ukrainians. Said one resident of Kursk: "Russia never gave us biscuits before! This is great!"

If Ukraine isn't careful, huge sections of Russia might defect to Ukraine for more humane treatment than they get under Putin. Entire provinces might go over to Ukraine.

 

Russian troops in Ukraine are drinking water from puddles, and wishing they could be sent to Kursk so they can surrender to Ukrainian troops and get a drink of clean water. They have to drink from puddles because they destroyed all utilities that were providing clean water in their areas of Ukraine. No one ever said that Russian soldiers were very bright.

According to Militarniy, the “Volnorez” system, still in its factory packaging when found, is designed to create a protective dome around military assets, particularly tanks, shielding them from drone attacks. This system first emerged within Russian military units in the fall of last year, specifically engineered to combat FPV (First-Person View) drones, which have become a critical tool in modern warfare.

Russian forces have kept the technical details of the “Volnorez” system under wraps, but the captured documentation may provide Ukrainian experts with insights into its capabilities. The system works by disrupting the connection between an incoming drone and its control station, causing the drone to lose its flight path and allowing the protected vehicle to avoid being hit.

“Upon activation, the ‘Volnorez’ system is intended to sever the link between the drone and its operator, leading the drone to veer off course,” Militarniy reported. This technology is particularly effective against improvised FPV drones, which, when they lose signal, typically crash to the ground, rendering them ineffective.

Russia appears to have diverted several thousand troops from occupied territory inside Ukraine to counter a surprisingly successful Ukrainian offensive inside Russian borders in a move that potentially weakens Moscow’s war effort, two senior US officials told CNN.

The development has drawn American attention and US officials are now working to determine precisely how many troops Russia is moving, but sources said multiple brigade-sized elements made up of at least 1,000 troops each appeared to have shifted to the Kursk region, where Ukraine launched an operation last week.

 

In my opinion winning "hearts and minds" in Kursk may have a significant impact on this conflict and cause Russian citizens to question what the hell Putin is doing!

 

These are the best two videos I have found on the Ukrainian operation inside Russia. Jake Broe is unabashedly pro-Ukrainian, so take any of his prognostications with a grain of salt. But his facts and his analysis of past events are usually spot on.

 

For the most part, seems the expansion has been contained by Russia. Russia would be wise to waste no time pushing them out, as we can see what digging in a defensive position can do in this war. I'm still not holding my breath as far as Ukraine being able to hold this turf long term, but we shall see. It's worth mentioning also that this land is mostly very small villages or forestland. There's not a lot of strategic value for Ukraine to sacrifice 10,000+ troops in defending it.

Based on non-state polls Putin continues to enjoy the type of approval ratings Western leaders can only dream of.

The only significant pushback he’s getting is from Russians who think he’s prosecuting the war too gently.

Russians are more sophisticated and better-rounded than us Westerners. They read their news AND our news.

That might be the case, but I don’t see it in evidence. The Ukrainian advance appears to be limited by its logistics and how wise it would be to stretch its supply lines, not by actions the Russians have yet taken. The Ukrainians appear to be entrenching on favorable ground of their choosing and daring the Russians to attack, which they do not seem to be willing or able to do yet.

Is it as easy to do as it is to say? Russia’s best units are tied down in Ukraine, and its biggest weakness in the war so far has arguably been logistics. Redeploying the forces necessary to eject the Ukrainians is not going to be quick or easy, logistically speaking.

You casually assume that Ukraine intends to hold this terrain long term. I’m not convinced of that. If Russia does indeed retake the ground by force (not just because the Ukrainians withdraw on purpose, having accomplished their mission) and the Russians kill or capture 10,000 Ukrainians, then you will be proven correct, and this operation will be a strategic disaster for Ukraine. But if the Ukrainians force the Russians to strategically redeploy, cause a bunch of Russian casualties (especially to conscripts), and withdraw in good order before decisively engaged, then this operation will be a huge success and there won’t be any serious spinning of it otherwise. As you say, the terrain itself is not of value (to Ukraine), but what Russia is willing to spend in terms of casualties and damage is of great value to Ukraine.
