Detroit Judge has kid on a field trip handcuffed, threatens jail, over falling asleep

Pretty sure if you or I did that it would be called false imprisonment or kidnapping.

 

Reminds me of the two Daytona Beach Shores cops who locked their three and half year old in a jail cell for going potty in his/her britches, or the numerous stories of cops handcuffing kids under the age of 9.

 

That situation is indicative of a bigger problem that doesn't get talked about enough. I left a part time position at that dept in large part because those two officers and their direct supervisor who is still there. Those two in particular are robots incapable of using discretion who were hand picked and promoted through their ranks by their LT, now chief. The three of them in particular decide who stays and who goes and do so through a culture of mostly passive aggressive harassment. Most of the subordinates are really good people who are just trying to make a living although they have been well known around here to have a couple agro robot cops over the years.

Overall point being the administration and the city council are not held accountable enough for putting the wrong people in positions they shouldn't be in. Those two had no business being in supervisory roles. The male officer was forced out as a fall guy and his wife still works there as does their chief.

 

I remember us talking about this in the other thread. I want to say I saw a video the other day that said he was hired on by a different dept, but can't say for sure going off of memory.

Not sure but it wouldn't surprise me. Don't believe he was "terminated" but he was definitely reluctantly forced out for damage control. I watched several really great people and good officers ger forced out over the course of 4 years I worked there by those 3. They knew how to do it within their operating procedures and selective enforcement. Most people don't understand how to document a trail of evidence and so they either conform or leave. Again, I defend police often here because I know too many who are good and decent people but there is definitely a problem with how and who gets promoted and the trickle down effects of it.

 

I think this judge has some lessons he needs to be taught!

 

Would be interesting to know what kind of attitude the student portrayed when awakened. Cuffing and threatening are probably not the best recourse. Getting an unruly teen under control can be difficult. My suggestion would be for the judge to firmly ask school admins to remove the young lady from the courtroom. She's probably not apt to learn a lesson in that moment, but the remaining students might and sometimes educators have to reach those who are reachable.

Edit: According to the video report, the judge did ask that she be removed, but apparently that was not effective. I wonder why not.

 

In reading this article the girl apparently has no bed to sleep in and was very tired. Per her mom and school personnel.

The judge seems to be a DB.

This is what is wrong today. Going after the judge rather than disciplining the teenager. She was disrespectful in his court room and he was having none of it.

Supposedly she was traumatized by his threat of juvenile detention but it didn't bother her to have attitude towards a court judge.

She will never learn a lesson if she is continually coddled and not reprimanded for her actions.

This is a simple case of FAFO!

Good on the judge.

A kid. On a field trip. Not a defendant. Not someone being unruly in the gallery. Not a defiant juror. A kid. On a field trip.

From what I've read, she has good grades and has never been in trouble. Her, her sister, and her mom do not have a permanent residence. Despite the asshole judge telling her she "can go home and sleep in her own bed," her mom said that she doesn't have a bed of her own to sleep in. Hell, doesn't even sound like she has a home. She was on the field trip as part of a non-profit organization that she's enrolled with.

Also, studies have shown that scared straight doesn't work.

 

I really don't care, I just have zero problems with what the judge did.
Also I read an article that said when she was wearing the jumpsuit and the judge was asking her classmates should he be lenient with her. She was laughing with her classmates.

Apparently she only became traumatized after she got home. More than likely when the parents got involved and saw dollar signs.

 

If reports are true that the young lady acted out, it's understandable that she should be taught a lesson. In this case, though, it does not appear that the punishment fits the "crime." I have my doubts about the teachability in this moment. Unfortunately, it appears that the lesson being taught was the all powerful one will make the rules as he sees fit. You are but a pawn in this setting and will comply or be locked up.

I question the effectiveness of that message. The judge's intent was noble, but his method was flawed.

 

At the end of that report, they stated that the judge offered to mentor the 15yr old girl. Ummmm . . . .
