My fav BB song was always Sloop John B. Here's the inspiration of their rendition: Some of the back story (and pile of other reditions): Sloop John B – A fascinating musical voyage into the past. #MusicisLife #TedTocksCovers #TheBeachBoys #ClevelandSimmonsGroup #TheWeavers #TheKingstonTrio #JohnnyCash #TheTokens #JimmieRodgers #LonnieDonegan #TheVentures #ChetAtkins #JerryReed #JerryJeffWalker #WaylonJennings #SimpleMinds #DwightYoakam #BeachamCoakley #JoshTurner https://www.songfacts.com/facts/the-beach-boys/sloop-john-b
That first link is a tremendous article containing a lot of enjoyable versions of the song and a thorough history. Thanks!
Yeah--Van Morrison, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings... I actually thought the Simple Minds' version was surprisingly good:
It took me a long time to warm up to the Beach Boys because, when I was a kid, TBS would always interrupt my favorite shows to advertise mail order Beach Boys music. Same reason I disliked Conway Twitty, The Carpenters, and Elvis, among others.
"...everytime you hear that Beach Boys sound...it just makes you feel good!" Lol! Yeah, they got me. I'm sure I have that *tape* floating around somewhere...
1 of my fav bands decided to cover Sloop John B on a tour.....which is a really odd decision, b/c Curt is NOT & never has been a good singer. The Kirkwood brothers are a good counter example to "blood harmonies". without further ado, a not great version fun fact. the drummer is the son of Doug Sahm, legendary tex-mex musician.
Not bad. It's such a classic song though, you can't really muck it up. Fun song to sing with groups when toasty. So after countess drunken renditions, i suppose the bar is set fairly low. Lol!
Slim lived (& died) in Orange Park. When I was in HS me & my punk rock friends saw him in the OP mall & started yelling for him to yodel for us. He did not.
I wonder if his story had an impact on Reagan's view of doctors... especially psychiatrists. You know what I mean if you knew what went on in real life during that time.
Dennis is the one who ended up with Charles Manson living in his place wasn't he? I would like to see it but don't get Disney plus I don't think.
They mentioned his association with Manson but didn’t get that into it. I was thinking late 70s Dennis who was kicked out of the band for doing too much coke and him getting busted with a 16 year old in a hotel with booze and coke.
I came across this a few weeks ago. I don't really care about the Red Hot Chili Peppers but I respect that they genuinely understand and appreciate music history. I think this is really good and an excellent example of infusing their own style while being respectful of the source material.
I actually prefer the later stuff. Pet Sounds, Friends and Sunflower. The surfer stuff all ran together at a certain point with a few exceptions. HATED that Kokomo crap. Would turn the radio off when it came on.
With all due respect…the chili peppers really effed that beautiful song up. They need to stay in their lane and go back under the bridge.
That biopic that was done a while ago had the Manson tie in included but I thought it was BS. Something about he was dating an underage girl that was associated with Manson and letting the Manson family borrow his Corvette or something. Maybe it was true.
Yeah, that stuff is untouchable, but I think the earlier stuff has a sort of simplicty that is timeless. Maybe that's why punks covered that type of music.
