And if we came up with some hypothetical system that everyone agreed was fair that allowed trans athletes to compete, some of them would still win, and win convincingly ... that's how sports works. That's my whole problem with the Semenya situation ... is it fair to make a woman take hormones until they get back into 'normal' range too? If we get too deep in the muck about erasing certain advantages of birth in the name of competition ... we also ruin the spirit of sports. But again, literally no one thinks someone should be able to just "become" a woman overnight and be allowed to compete in high level competition.

I've said this before and I will say it again. I support gay and trans folks 100%. I am in awe of their social courage to live their best life!

However, I feel that people who are genetically anomalous should not be able to compete in female sports as that Y chromosome imparts inherent genetic advantages both metabolic and physical vs a genetic woman (XX).

It's absolutely and EXACTLY the same. The ONLY DIFFERENCE is that Phelps is the best ever and Thomas was just a top-1% male swimmer. Either way, it doesn't take a brain surgeon to see what was going to happen, especially when this wasn't a full transition. Not only that, but the daily times told everyone involved what would happen.

I think the issue would be how to get from A (person who might have Y chromosome) to B (testing for that). "She looks like a man" isn't going to pass legal muster, so you'll have to test everyone. I'm not taking a position either way, but that's going to be a pain in the ass, especially if we're applying to all sports.

But let me throw you a curveball. What about women's gymnastics? Keeping in mind that the events are literally tailored to women's bodies. In that case, Y would be a major disadvantage. This is why I lean to letting the governing bodies handle this as they know their sports best.

I think any agency or regulatory body who currently require tests for doping can throw a DNA test in there. The cost of a DNA test for the chromosome pairing is really cheap, especially if done in bulk.
