That's a healthy mix. I wont lie, even though some of the early stuff is corny, its still good. I think there's a song about drinking root beer on their first album, and I kinda dig it haha.

Admittedly, when I think of the Beach Boys, Kokomo is the song I think of most, lol. Reading this thread makes me think I need to branch out and listen to some of their other stuff!

I think that's true of many who grew up when that song was massive and was only alive for that. Imagine college-age me getting super into Brian Wilson, talking about the Beach Boys and people being like "oh you mean the Kokomo guys?" :)

Saw BB's play on National Mall in DC on July 4, 1985 with about 150K of my best friends. Great day of music - Jimmy Page made a cameo appearance for some songs and solos. Fireworks after concert were great also.

God only knows where I'd be without them. o_O
Living right here in Redondo Beach where the band started
(besides their family home -now gone- in Hawthorne).

    Update…
The recent news about Brian Wilson (81) has been sad and disheartening. He lost his wife and “lifeline”, Melinda (77), on January 30th, 2024, and he has been diagnosed with “major neurocognitive disorder” (dementia).

I watched this last night and enjoyed it. I would like to see one of these things that doesnt yada yada through the late 60s and 70s, but I'm not sure who the audience is for that.

I find the early 60s absolutely fascinating.
I’ve been watching them on YouTube during those early years. I can’t believe how amazing they sound. They were nerds and just killing it on stage.
The harmonies on those fellas are ineffable.

The secret ingredient of having brothers harmonize. That's probably why I like the Louvin Brothers and the Everly Brothers so much too.

    Interesting…
Apparently Dennis and Mike Love didn’t care for each other and had mutual restraining orders at one time.

Yeah, they did contrive a happy ending in the doc where all the ones still living hang out on the beach, I'm not sure Brian and Mike Love are that cool either. Dennis had kind of a dark side (stuff that goes against his chill fun guy image they would never touch in a band approved doc), and Mike Love was kind of the most focused on the business side so I can imagine there were some bad vibes in the 70s and early 80s.

My takeaway was that it is amazing the band listened and took direction from Brian for as long as they did.
Sporadically, when BW was feeling ok, they were able to crush the harmony and create magic.
Surprises me you like this kind of music. In the past you disapproved of my taste lol.

I had boomer parents, they couldnt help but have some quality records. I loved the Beach Boys when I was a kid, then sort of dismissed them as uncool in HS and then got back into it when other bands I liked would talk about Brian Wilson and his influence. I think I "discovered" a lot of bands that way. Tom Petty would reference the Byrds a lot, for example.

This is my favorite Beach Boys song, I believe their first hit, albeit a minor one, after Carl took over.

There's a clip of that one in the movie. Definitely one of their best. I forget who said it in the film, but they said Carl had "the voice of an angel" and I'd have to agree between this and God Only Knows.

This is one of my favorite Beach Boys songs, but I don’t think it ever got much play the US. I first heard this song when I was staying with a family outside London the Christmas after high school. The dad had this album and we listened to it quite a bit.

This song only reached #103 in the USA, but #1 in Australia and Norway; #2 in Denmark, South Africa and Sweden; #3 in Ireland; #5 in the UK; #12 in the Netherlands; #13 in New Zealand; and #29 in West Germany.

This is originally the Ronettes 1966.
Beach boys did a cover in 1969 I believe.
Not their first hit but I love Carls voice on this one. Great song.
