You were eating in Mama Lo’s kitchen!
It was not a large, well appointed place but that was part of the appeal to partake in genuine southern food.
It didn’t bother me so much but I can see it could be uncomfortable when crowded.

 

Anyone remember the all you can eat fried shrimp joint in circa 1977-78; it was in the older Publix shopping center at 34th and University (it was on the Northside of Publix in a storefront suite. The shrimp were pretty good but they would skimp on quantities of shrimp if you were packing them in. (called “shrimp skimp”) I’m guessing some Gator linemen found out about it and closed it down. I can’t possibly recall the name nor was it open long. Just wondering…

Back to our water skiing days at UF for a moment:

Did any of y’all ever ski in Noonan’s Lake with the alligators and water moccasins? We used to go there when we didn’t want to take the time to drive out to Cowpen or Santa Fe. I’ve got some stories on that place

 

Must have opened right after I left at the end of 76. But we used to spend a lot of time on the south side of the same Publix at Allen’s Gator Haus. Ever go there?

 

Yes I did go there! I went to that Publix to return some kind of cheap, crappy beer bottles for deposit. I think I left a car in that same parking lot and the PD contacted me to come get it out if the impound lot. I told them something not wise like, you can keep it.

 

if I remember it was just me and my sister getting a late lunch I think. Pork chops maybe. Good food. I remember the place was written up in GQ too.

Philly’s. The first one is on Creighton down by Spanish Trail. Now he has one out in pace and another on 9 mile road.

Been to Baton Rouge twice for football games and had a blast both times. Them corn dogs are crazy, but love to party and very hospitable. Of course, you’ll have some students who will give you hell, but they are much funner fans to party with than all of our other rivals.

In order of worst fans…

4. FSU

 

Tailgating at Spurrier’s sounds expensive.

 

Never skied Newnan’s. We did live on a small lake in Melrose that was pretty loaded. I remember skiing during the day, then going back out after dark to spotlight all the gators. We had a few monsters in there.

My dad worked very hard to keep our beach area clean, which kept them from congregating right there. We still had some that would swim by the dock. We actually had about a six footer that would swim by at dusk every night, but most of what we saw was little babies, likely trying to hide from the big boys that hung out across the lake. We never had any issues with them. Two of our neighbors had small dogs that were attacked, but they never messed with the people, and none of our dogs were ever messed with. Water moccasins and coral snakes always scared me much more than the gators.

We found it annoying and puzzling when they shut down the Orange and Brew and the wing place there at the Union. It used to be perfect for game days.
