What I can't figure out is why Israel hasn't already done it and the only answer I can come up with is the United States doesn't want the region to devolve into a messy war. Also, while some of what you stated is very true, I'm not so sure it's quite that simple to render Iran useless. Iran has a decent military and a distinct advantage in any ground war/conventional conflict. When you think about it, the only reason Iran's proxies get away with terrorizing Israel year after year is because they can.

Sinwar’s existence is limited and is relegated to scurrying through tunnels in Gaza with his family. He is a hunted man. Had a brutal and ruthless reign in Hamas and was in charge of torture and execution of those that cooperated with Israel. Another will take his place.
The link below is to a lengthy New Yorker piece about the man.

the answer is overwhelming air superiority. By a large margin. All Iran can really do is commit large scale forces a la the Russians and they would take heavy losses a la the Russians. The Israelis don’t want a larger conflict either but they also arent going to be abandoned by the west and commit suicide.

All true, except he has been the one wielding the power, calling the shots, from the tunnels.

Yep. In The linked article it discusses how he is unable to use electronic communications for fear his location will be discovered and has to pass notes via currier which has caused a lot of delay communicating with his guy in Qatar. I think he will be got though as operations continue. He is a dead man walking

I agree the air superiority is the difference maker. How viable is it to destroy all of Iran's oil infrastructure though? Maybe easier said than done?

Don’t have to. Make the ports unnavigable. . Sink a supertanker in the channel.. destroy the ability to on and offload oil. then they can’t move any product and economy is toast in a week unless they use camels or magic carpets. The Iranians are very vulnerable and friends and foes know it

How are they going to get manpower to the Israeli border? Iran has nothing but missiles, drones, and proxies. Hezbollah has a sweet gig in Lebanon and they don't want to get obliterated anymore than Iran does.

    interesting...

Iran’s new president battles revolutionary guard to stop all-out war with Israel (msn.com)

The IRGC’s insistence on targeting Israel is “more about undermining his week-long presidency rather than covering the humiliation they have suffered,” said the presidential aide who spoke to The Telegraph from Tehran.
    .......................
“These recent exercises in the country’s western border are just to intimidate Mr Pezeshkian. Sepah [the IRGC] is very insistent on targeting Israel and they think it is easy,” a second aide to Mr Pezeshkian told The Telegraph. “He has suggested targeting somewhere related to Israel in the Republic of Azerbaijan or [Iraqi] Kurdistan and let these countries know before that and get done with the whole drama.”
    ....................
Many of the people close to Mr Pezeshkian “believe the negligence of Haniyeh’s security was intentional to drag Mr Pezeshkian into war”. A blame game is now unfolding within the IRGC, The Telegraph understands, as various factions turn on each other over the security breach.

    another one down...

Israeli army eliminates another Hamas commander in Lebanon (msn.com)
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has eliminated senior Hamas commander Samer Mahmoud al-Haj in Lebanon, according to the Telegram channel of the Israeli army.

The terrorist was eliminated by an airstrike targeting the Sidon area in Lebanon, located approximately 60 kilometers from the border between the two countries.
The Hamas commander was responsible for orchestrating terrorist attacks and launching rockets from Lebanon towards Israeli territory. Additionally, Samer was the commander of military forces at the Ain al-Hilweh camp near Sidon and was in charge of recruiting and training terrorists for attacks on Israel.

never let a crisis go to waste....sad

is it wrong that I hope Iran does somethign stupid enough to justify Israel pounding the IGRC and iranian leadership so the people have a fighting chance to take their country back?

Executions surge as Iran uses Israel tensions as cover for crackdown at home (msn.com)

Iran has executed a record number of prisoners while global attention has been focused on the prospect it may go to war with Israel.

Human rights observers say the Islamic Republic is using international tensions as cover while it cracks down on dissent at home.

On Wednesday, the regime carried out its largest mass execution in more than two decades, putting 29 prisoners to death in a single day.

Iran's popular VP, who helped the pres win, resigns after 11 days when pres forms a cabinet populated with conservatives from previous regime...this won't make the population happy

Iran's vice president resigns after 11 days in office (msn.com)

Javad Zarif has stepped down from the post of vice president, citing his disappointment with the new Cabinet. It's the second crisis for newly elected President Masoud Pezeshkian.Iran's vice president, Mohammad Javad Zarif, is resigning, leaving President Masoud Pezeshkian's Cabinet just 11 days after his appointment.

"I am not satisfied with my work and regret that I have not been able to fulfil expectations," the moderate politician said on the social media platform X.

Zarif, Iran's former foreign minister, hinted that the selection of ministers for Pezeshkian's new Cabinet had been the reason for his decision. At least seven of the 19 ministers nominated were not his first choice, according to Zarif.

Candidates did not match promised reforms

just another log on the opposition fire. wonder what would happen if Israel took out the IGRC and others that quash opposition. Ibet that Iran leadership is wondering the same thing, or at least they should be

I can't blame Israel for the preemptive strikes, but I'm sure that will be spun as a provocation in of itself. Seems like a no win situation. I figured this would be a coordinated attack from the various factions: Hezbollah, Hamas and Iran proper. One would think more is to come very soon since the bandaid has been ripped.

If Iran gets directly involved again, I hope Israel goes for the Iranian government leadership. I'd like to see the highest-ranking members taken out including the Ayatollah Khamenei.
