Do you think its a coincidence that when the admin hires management-side consultants, they come up with the idea to hire more management and pay them more? And of course this never results in things like hiring more full/permanent professors, increasing budgets of underfunded or stagnating departments, reducing the teaching load, etc. It all seems very self-serving to me. Exactly how it works in the corporate world. You even said it yourself - "you gotta spend money to make money" - that's the aim of management, not offering a world class education.

I rarely post on Too Hot but I wanted to commend slayerxing's assessment, his dissection of administrative processes is very spot on - especially the part about the University running lean during Fuch's tenure. This was a result of the "Strive for 5" directive - administrative personnel and costs were slashed from the top down to run lean to achieve the University ranking we have today. I will refrain from opining additional granular details.

In other news, University of Florida puts $25 million towards faculty salary raises

I had been approached by consultants throughout my business ownership. My first question is how hiring you as a consultant was going to add value to my company. I never got a good answer to that. So I never hired one. Funnily enough after I retired I did some consulting. At first I could give bullet points of how my skills were useful. After about five years I couldn’t so I stopped doing it.

Sasse is a scumbag, not only for exploiting UF to enrich he and his cronies, but for using his wife's epilepsy as a scapegoat for his departure.

hey I have a lot of friends in admin. The good ones absolutely want to help faculty offer a world class education. There are plenty of faculty that would only offer a shit education if admin wasn’t pushing them to be better. And Uf hires tons of faculty and wants to hire tons more. Hell even faculty clamor for certain kinds of more admin. Like instructional designers, grant support, academic support staff, etc. so it’s not like all admin is bad. Central admin that is good finds a way to make money or stretch money to get the most bang for buck on faculty and support staff to improve teaching.
Look at the grad school a few years ago- total mismanagement led to a decline in available PhD stipends. It was a disaster. With a good admin hire they have now improved the grad school and consequently improved things for faculty and doctoral students - which directly impacts undergrads. Just one example.

You libbies have something in common with transgenders…mental illnesses like
    Anxiety and depression.
Also calling me dumb doesn’t make you look as good as you think it does lol.

Yeah we have over 100 professors that make north of a half million dollars a year and no one say spit about that, but OMG a conservative Prez requires a deep dive like never seen before by a bunch of kiddie hacks. I don't have a problem with crawling up Sasse's ass as long as you crawl up every other president's butt to do the same examination. They are all wonks to me and all overpaid.

I don't have to call you dumb. You exemplify it every time you write. You lob generalizations and insults on 90% of your posts and think you have high ground? Anything not lock step with your thinking is "libbie." Again, absolutely mindless partisan garbage from you. Always.

I've been in the mill on the labor side, I think I'm always going to have a different perspective on this, especially with a liberal arts background, where our programs had to sell admin on "hey we use computers and stuff too so we're relevant" and talk about "digital humanities" to just keep funding in some cases. Even when admin does positive things like you are talking about, its usually in service of programs that bring in dollars. Its not much different from sports, where the so-called "revenue" sports garner the most prestige and care, etc.

Looks like we’re not connecting the way I had hoped we would.
I always make friends with pompous, sanctimonious types.
    Shame.

    story going national

Ben Sasse, former University of Florida president, spent millions hiring his Republican allies (msn.com)

The former president of the University of Florida, retired Republican Sen. Ben Sasse, directed millions in university dollars to Republican allies, the Independent Florida Alligator reported.

Sasse, who was university president for 17 months, tripled his office’s spending from $5.6 million to $17.3 million, The Alligator reported. Sasse represented Nebraska in the U.S. Senate before he took the position, which was offered to him by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

I'm sure some will spin this, but to me it's bad PR for UF and the Board of Trustees. The Board needs to get off its ass and pick an academic to run the University. (I'm not optimistic tho)

Also I note that it's been over a year and a half and they haven't found a suitable Prez for FAU.
