You may want to read the rest of the thread before relying on political ads as a source of facts, because there are some interesting facts (including some taken from Tim’s own congressional campaign website) on at least the point in the first line that largely contradict the ad you’re relying on.
I checked and CNN reported that he retired two months BEFORE his unit received orders to deploy to Iraq. And, of course Okee's OP source was J.D. Vance (if he hasn't changed his name today).
I’ll do you a favor. There’s something big that CNN article isn’t telling you. See if you can deduce what it is from the post linked here: Vance fires up the Swift Boat campaign on Walz
A. He didn't say the opposite. He said that he was continuing his campaign and possibly deploying (although he didn't know if he would need to do so) according to your link. You are spinning a bit here by eliminating the fact that he didn't know for sure that he would need to deploy nor, seemingly, the implications of that for his campaign. B. DOD's guidance suggests nothing of the sort. If you are obligated to remain in the armed forces, then you would need to stop the campaign. He was not. He had 24 years in and was not being stop-lossed. He did a substantial amount of military service. The fact that he wanted to run for Congress does not diminish his service, no matter how much you wish it did.
Why does it not "feel great" to you? Being a Congress Member is still public service. Yes, I deployed, but that doesn't make me better or worse than any other man who didn't go to the combat zone.
“As Command Sergeant Major I have a responsibility not only to ready my battalion for Iraq, but also to serve if called on.” “4.2.2.4 If a member covered by the prohibition in subparagraph 4.2.2. becomes a nominee or candidate for civil office prior to commencing active duty, then the member must request permission in writing and submit the request to the Secretary concerned before entering active duty. The member must understand that if the Secretary concerned does not grant permission, then the member must immediately decline the nomination or withdraw as a candidate.”
The same thing that makes me uncomfortable about most politicians - it implies a somewhat narcissistic belief that no one other than them is capable of fulfilling the job of serving in Congress, and that getting to Congress is more important than following through on the duty you already accepted.
Guessing you must have deduced what CNN left out since we’ve now moved on from insisting it’s not true to off-topic meme spam. Glad I could assist.
Which is true, until he retired. Upon retirement, that isn't true. He was legally allowed to retire up until the final decision on deployment was made, which was 2 months after he retired. Yes, if he was on active duty, that would be the requirement (assuming that the Secretary did not grant him leave to run a campaign in which he couldn't participate). However, he was not. As such, the directives do not state that he was supposed to stop his campaign rather than retire. As such, your claim was not true.
I realize their is an official date for when orders are issued but in most cases aren't those orders "unofficially" known weeks, if not months before they are actually officially issued?
The hypocrisy here is stunning. Gov Walz stated a fact . . . that he served 24 years in the National Guard and retired honorably. Gov Walz has done FAR MORE than your POS POTUS, who has repeatedly mocked US war heroes and told General Miley that he didn't want a certain veteran amputee to be near him in public again because it made him (POS POTUS) look bad. He said no one wants to see these amputees. Disgraceful.
