I assume, with such ability to reach Tehran, that Israel will go after Iran's nuclear facilities when the time comes. And according to a recent statement by Blinken, the time till Iran has a nuclear weapon is pretty damn short. Like weeks.

Who knows. I searched for images / videos after G8trGr8t’s post and Al Jeezera had a video of the dead terrorist hugging the President of Iran just hours before he was killed. I think Israel’s message to Iran was very clear. We have capabilities to hit exactly where we want in your country.

The intel is what impresses me. His location no doubt a tightly guarded state secret. Gives me confidence Israel has a pretty good layout of where Iran’s nuclear facilities are located and probably the homes of their top nuclear scientists to boot.

That Israel was willing to kill one of the lead negotiators for a ceasefire and hostage deal tells you everything you need to know. The possibility of a regional war is much higher now. I won’t even speculate on the fate of the remaining hostages with this development.

Iran is claiming it was an Israel air strike? That really isn't saying much for their air defense systems or their air force.

I fail to see why Israel hasn’t steamrolled Iran at this point. If they can strike prestige targets inside of Iran without risking an Israeli casualty, it seems to me they could weaken a lot of Iranian ground support before bringing an invasion. I would assume the main hurdle is where the IDF would invade Iran from. The options are quite limited.

In today’s Sun-Sentinel, in their world News Briefs section, they had a picture of the new Iranian President being sworn in and celebrating. He’s shown hugging Haniyeh, with the caption summarizing the celebration.

Not reported or mentioned in the caption is that Haniyeh was later killed in Tehran by a missile strike.

(I couldn’t figure out how to load the Sentinel’s picture here;sorry about that)

Cry me a river. The ICC had an arrest warrant out for Heniyeh for war crimes, crimes against humanity, murder, and criminal responsibility for the Oct 7th attacks. Just read the bullet points from the International Criminal Court.

Edit: I left out rape and torture.

Statement of ICC Prosecutor Karim A.A. Khan KC: Applications for arrest warrants in the situation in the State of Palestine

Same body that Israel refuses to be part of because they are investigating Israelis for war crimes btw. This really is not about the man either. More about the murder suicide pact we have with Israel. I know most of our posters are horny for war with Iran but it’s not a good outcome for peace in the region. Perhaps Israel will defy
History and kill their way to peace .

Yep, that same ICC is looking into Israel’s actions. It gives their claim that this guy was a POS even more legitimacy. The continued terrorist attacks and Iran’s new president kissing and hugging with all his proxies which continue to try to wipe out Israel just a few hours before the attack means the two sides were soooooo close to achieving Nirvana in the Middle East.

I agree with our State Department that you can’t equate Hamas’ terrorism with Israel’s response. And suicide for the United States because we support Israel? Really? The dude was a Terrorist according to our State Department, planned Oct 7th and he deserved to be killed by Israel.

These are the kind of targeted strikes we WANT Israel to do. We want them to stop leveling cities and target terrorist leaders instead.

They should have our full throated support for precision strikes like this against critical terrorist leadership.

The only worry is that by targeting someone inside Iran, we risk escalation into a broader conflict that drags the US back to war. Which obviously we would like to avoid right now, but I think one can already see if you stand back and look that the whole world seems to be on the path to wider war. Maybe we should just start getting ready for it...

I don’t think the point of the icc is to provide rationale for extra judicial killings, quite the opposite!

I agree these are the good types of strikes. It will be interesting to see if this leads to a wider escalation. I don’t think China, Russia or the United States care enough about Israel or Iran to actually lead to a serious escalation with international powers fighting. Iran will retaliate to save face, but I think they will continue to fight through proxies (and the proxy war is already ramped up). I think the show of force and capabilities could actually deter Iran from directly engaging Israel more. Both sides HATE each other and are hot headed, so Iran’s response will say a lot.

The strike does go a long way in pointing out to Iran "we know where you're hiding things and we can strike them with impunity." Which should lessen Iran's willingness to engage in a wider-scale conflict, one would think. I think back to the killing of Soleimani. Iran sent a few rockets at an American base in Iraq and that was it. They also shot down a commercial jetliner, killing tons of civilians because they were so nervous about further U.S. strikes. Not exactly an overwhelming response.

The issue may be that we didn't keep the foot on the neck and have allowed Iran to re-spawn and become much closer to a nuclear warhead. Time will tell. If this had happened in 2020, I'd wager a yawn of a response from Iran. But now and with it being Israel, anything is possible.
