She tips off her off speed pitch with a slower arm motion. You just have to sit on her fast ball. A good hitting team will beat her. A team with a bunch of suckers for the high ball will have trouble.
Softball players on the whole are probably more inclined academically. But if this was a football, basketball or baseball transfer from Stanford would we necessarily be having this conversation?
That they didn't really want her in the first place. Which we all know is a lie. They're not used to a star player turning them down. Apparently never considering them in the first place.
Now that the Canada saga is over, we need to focus on our last need for next year’s team. We need a bullpen catcher. Our other catchers on the team will be in the starting line up, Jocey and A.K.
Without having landed one already, I think we convert/cross train someone from the team. A Brooke Barnard seems a likely candidate.
The Athletic posted a long, and seemingly well sourced, article on Canady's recruitment to Tech. Oil money as we all thought. But the interesting thing is it alleges Canady and her parents were looking for a seven figure NIL offer AFTER HER FRESHMAN YEAR! If that is true, and there is no reason to not believe it, I highly doubt Tim ever expressed any interest in her. The article says she visited Tennessee, Alabama, UCLA, Kansas and, of course, Tech. As an aside, many folks, even those such as me who were not opposed to getting her, also frequently expressed doubts on what it might do to the team chemistry and in particular to this very good young staff. After seeing Red pitch, I think there could even be another reason he had little or no interest. Why screw up a potentially dominant staff with Keagan, Red, Ava and Olivia?
Exactly my thoughts! IMHO, we may eventually have the premier staff in all D1 after Coach SVP puts in her finishing touches.
From the Athletic article it referenced their annual rev was approx $1.2-1.3 mil, and that was AFTER a $1mil donation. They still lost $200k-$300k. The head coach has a 5 yr deal for $1.2 mil/starting at $250k next year. Huge deal for her within a very modest team budget.
I woouldl assume if one player commands that amout of money, other players may not be happy with what they are getting. Just a thought.
After Oxley’s performance last weekend, my expectation for her went from nonexistent to relatively high. Schumaker, Thomas, and Lamar all look like they can be immediate contributors. Fall ball will be fun. Massive competition all over the field.
I am extremely excited about Fall Ball. I hope the Gator Softball site does a good job of covering it. In the past, it has been spotty.
It would be nice if they published the Fall Schedule so I can plan my trips better! I know they will be JC's but it will still help determine who will be playing and who will be coming off the bench.
Jayden Heavener, from Pace HS, beat Oxley & Bartow in the state 6A title game 2-0. Heavener threw a 2-hitter and hit a 2-run HR to win the game. She's going to LSU and that will make for some great match-ups over the next 4 years.
