The last conservative who really tried to compromise was John McCain. I voted for him. The Republican Party seems to be run by an odd coalition of evangelicals and the hyper rich. Anyone who thinks trump looks out for the working class is delusional.

I think a class in how to tell real news from infotainment would be invaluable. Now our web browsers curate the news we get to only show us what we like. We need to read and think about stuff we don’t like. Lots of people don’t.

Probably not because in this country the rich are usually immune from criminal prosecution.

The point of the comparison is the hyperbole. It's drawing on cultural memory of a dangerous figure who abused power and nearly destroyed a country and people. But it's true enough that even Trump's VP candidate compared him to Hitler. Plus, Trump himself has repeatedly invoked or drawn on Hitler.

Whataboutism at its finest. My guy can be a scumbag because in the past your guy was scummy. The American people didn’t elect Hillary at least partially because the family was sketchy.

I just know I can't communicate with these folks as there is zero common ground.

You must really love Kamala Harris. She is so far left that she can't be seen by a moderate conservative.

Curious and brief, I don't want it to go into some sort of debate, how did you feel about the Tea Party back in the day as it was a subset of the republican party?

I listened to a freakonomics podcast on our political duopoly. The guys working theory is the powers didn’t really care if an r or a d won as long as no one else was seriously considered.

I agree here but when does it end?

Look at our past. We aren't this awesome humanitarian do good country. We have meddled in everyone's business for years and practiced regime change that murdered millions (maybe in the thousands... a lot) of innocent lives in the process. All in the name of our ideology and benefit. Most Americans overlook that sticky fact while trying to act like we have some sort of moral high ground on the rest of the world. We dont. Most of our presidents have been corrup. This is why a lot of people voted for Trump to begin with. He wasn't the corrupt establishment (corrupt still stands lol). He comes with a lot of baggage but a lot of people take him over years and years of corruption in the US and around the world.

I get the evangelicals only caring about the pre born. I get it but think they are horrendously in error. I get the rich who only care about lower taxes for themselves. What I don’t get is everyone else are they just jerks who wish they could get away with the sleaze that trump does?

You have to put yourselves in their shoes. Maybe in their specific situation they had more money. Or their industry was booming when Trump was in office. The details don't matter, these are real people with families to feed. This is just hypothetical but you can bet those situations exist. Not everything is political. Not everyone watches or cares about the news. Sometimes its simply about surviving.

we are all entitled to our own opinions. we can agree on that

we are not entitled to our own facts. hopefully we could agree on that.

now can we agree on a set of sources to determine facts?

pick 8 from the middle three columns, excluding opinion pieces, to be used as sources. 4 from the middle 2 from each side of the middle. if we want to help resolve the problems, agreeing to a source for facts, ie defining our terms, is where we must begin to communicate again. until then it is the tower of babble and we have no interpreters.

Sadly, it has been my experience that MAGA would not accept info, sans opinion pieces, from any of the sources in the middle or left of center

also sad that the middle column is the least populated of them all. guess it reflects what the people are willing to pay for

sorry, this is a false narrative. the criminal justice system is charging him because he broke laws, not because of his politics. this narrative of djt as the world's biggest victim undermines the rule of law and democracy in this country, something our enemies hope to accomplish.

Lacuna doesn't get that Trump is taking up the populist issues MAGA (traditional Americans) believe in. Trump follows MAGA more than MAGA follows Trump.

When did Trump start talking about the border? In 2015 after Rodger Stone told him it was a big issue on the Rush Limbaugh and Michael Savage radio shows. Trump paid Stone to monitor those shows.

When Trump started saying good things about the Covis Vax he got.boord by MAGA which.has serious reservations about the Vax
, lockdowns and mandates. So Trump vacked off. Trump is now moving to adopt more populist positions regarding the vaccine

The problem people have is that you can't discern the difference between your truth, their truth, and the real actual truth. People believe in different truth's and A LOT of people believe its politically motivated. You have to change the way you see the problem to fix the problem. I guarantee you are both a little right and a little wrong but both will claim objective truth with other peoples information and sources. Hell, straight up video is almost not good enough for evidence anymore with what we can do with AI.

Point is, a lot of you fail to see the human aspect of this thing. These are human beings with lives and their life dictates how they see the facts here. This isn't like 99% agreement. This is a hot button 50/50 split or damn near close to it. You can't just marginalize these people and expect to gain any ground.

i think that was true before the right went so far right. what McConnell did with the supremes and the senate abdicating their responsibility in the impeachment hearings was definitely picking a side by a power that had the ability to do so. it moved power from congress to the potus and from congress to the supremes. both of which easier to control to get things done than congress

see post 155. we have to agree on what "facts" are and what sources we can use to validate information. we must define our terms. facts cannot be what you want them to be and credible sources cannot be limited to ones that echo your beliefs.
