The crux of the failure IMO was that the SS didn’t pull Trump from the stage the second the sniper who spotted Crooks with a friggin’ range finder in his hands lost his visual of the threat.
Wasn't sure why everyone was assuming it was scoped. Not an easy shot on sloped roof knowing cop might pop up and shoot you any moment and your amped out of your mind with anxiety already. And why didn't the cop on the ladder get off a shot? He had to cover, he didn't have to stay covered. What was the communication protocol for shooter?
I assumed it was scoped because why wouldn't he have a scoped rifle if he was trying to make the shot?
Have they said what kind of rifle I was. So far I’ve only heard AR style rifle. Is it an AR15? Or An AR22. The sound ( hard to tell over tv) sounded like a .22 No need to scope a .22 because 150 yds is bout its max range. And ammo comes in 50 round boxes. If it was an AR15 150 yards is NOT a tough shot. Even with holographic sights. 50 rounds is generally 2 1/2 boxes.

It is very common for people in traumatic moments to get very narrowly focused on menial tasks Because their mind is saturated and the are restricted to rote memory like ‘where is my phone, where are my keys, where are my shoes etc’ Some people stay there for extended periods of time and stay in shock. Others don’t and it’s very difficult to simulate . Spielberg showed this in SPR with the beach scene where the one soldier was standing up straight and walking around looking for his arm. That was my conclusion.
Reading that the building the shooter was on was occupied by snipers from local law enforcement… probably why the SS didn’t immediately shoot him dead, may have assumed he was a local cop… still, should have pulled Trump off the stage until they knew what was going on…
So they found in excess of 15 guns at his parent's house. I assume those were also his father's guns but suffice to say someone in that house was a gun nut.
A DPMS AR-15 purchased in 2013. 150 yards with some kind of dot on an AR-15 isn't tough per se, but it also wouldn't be my first choice if I needed a head shot. Doable, even by someone with little experience, but not the best tool for the job. Re: the ammo, you don't buy 50 round boxes of match grade ammunition. They generally don't exist aside from something like Black Hills Mk262 which generally doesn't appear in stores. He was likely using bulk FMJ.
15 guns is really not a large number for someone who hunts or shoots regularly. Kind of like other tools, guns tend to multiply as you discover the need for specialized purposes.
Perhaps my use of "nut" offended. Someone who "shoots regularly" and owns 15 guns is a gun enthusiast with an interest in guns beyond home protection and probably even hunting. I don't know how many guns the average american gun owner possesses but I'm betting it's well below 15.
Average probably isn’t the best way to figure it, because there are a good number of folks who own literally hundreds and will skew your average way up. I think last time I saw numbers were that around half of gun owners own 1-2, a little less than a third own 3-7, and about 20% own 8 or more. That said, I agree with helix that, if you enjoy shooting, 15 isn’t a particularly big number at all.
That might not seem like a large number to you because you're a gun enthusiast as well with probably lots of friends who share your hobby - both online and in real life. Bottom line is the kid grew up in a house with a parent that owned more guns than 80% of gun owning Americans do. That seems significant to me.
I feel safer at the range with people that grew up around guns and were taught how to handle guns safely and respect what they can do. Many of us learned from our fathers. The guns don't shoot anyone no matter how many guns a person has. People with mental problems shoot people like this guy did. Most shootings are not even done with rifles they are done using handguns. Most times probably stolen or black market. The shooters most times probably don't own but the one gun they are using to rob someone. It seems his father had a small gun collection but his father didn't shoot anyone. I would think a gun collector would have used a better rifle for long range. I have grown up around a large number of people that hunt as a hobby and own at least a few guns and none of them have ever or would ever shoot anyone. Most of these mass shooters and assassins are not your typical gun owning rednecks. In many cases they are pretty much the opposite.
That is fair, but heck, I know people that have 10s or even hundreds of guitars, multiple grills/smokers/etc, closets full of designer purses, or liquor collections that could fill a room. The thing they all have in common is they all want to pursue their interests in a lawful fashion. I don’t know that it should really be particularly alarming that someone who lives in a part of the country where hunting and shooting is quite popular has 15 guns in their house. It’s not like they can use shoot more than one at a time.

I hadn’t heard what the actual gun was. And he 49 round purchase was a reason I was wondering if it was a .22 Match grade ammonia usually 20 rounds a box so 59 ends seemed weird
If he grew up in a household that glorified gun culture I think that’s relevant. Did his dad let him use his guns at the shooting range where he had a membership? We know he didn’t have any guns in his name. It makes me wonder if dad had been a rare guitar collector instead of a gun collector, does this happen? Maybe so, maybe not. Just food for thought.
