I don't think the VP pick was ever a determining factor although it may have had some impact in 2008 when John McCain selected Sarah Palin the original MAGA candidate eight years before Trump started using the label. Palin was MAGA before there was a MAGA.

Good point. USUALLY the pick doesn’t much matter but that one was beyond the pale. I saw Vance in some public appearance a month or so ago and it seemed obvious to me he had had some “work” done to his face and was heavily made up. Probably was told to to contrast with Biden’s obvious age. I knew then he had a really good shot.
