Any country that has almost half of its population living in extreme poverty (less than $1700 USD per year) while spending massive amounts of money building a modernized military cannot have a great future, and cannot be trusted. China is just such a country, with about 45% of its population living in squalor while the country is sporting two aircraft carriers and building a third. No one is trying to invade China, and no one has tried to invade China for over 75 years, so there is little need for military spending or modernization. Their military is geared towards invading their neighbors to defend ridiculous territorial claims. They have more than enough domestic problems that could benefit from spending the money that is going into the military. Building expensive projects like high speed rail is nice for the 55% of the population that can sometimes afford to ride it, but does no good for the other 45%.

I am guessing you perhaps meant $1700 per year?

Every country has individual rags to riches stories. (Josef Stalin was a dirt-poor killer and bank robber before becoming a Russian leader. Chairman Mao had a similar rise in fortunes.) For 45% of China's population, there is only rags to more rags in their future. The high speed rail system only benefits the wealthy.

When that represents about 8-10% of your annual salary (if you are one of the misfortunate 45% of Chinese people)? Don't you think people should worry about eating and having a roof over their heads first, before they go traveling cross-country?

This would be equivalent to a minimum wage person in the U.S. flying first class across the U.S. for vacation. Yes, it is theoretically possible, but extremely foolish for their financial future.

China is getting desperate over the European tariffs on their electric vehicles.

China goes into panic mode over EU tariffs on electric cars, offers perks for German carmakers if they drop restrictions

Some guy says that China is relatively weak on innovation. Not sure whether to put any stock in what he says, since he may not be trustworthy.

Xi Jinping admits China is 'relatively weak' on innovation and needs more talent to dominate the tech 'battlefield'

Expect a massive talent drain on top executives and innovators in China, as Chairman Xi caps salaries at $400k/yr. Just letting the people know who's boss as he burns the country down to the ground. China is even collecting excess salaries from previous years, likely prompting some to think about taking their money and running instead of paying it back.

Add: China produces 54% of the world’s steel whereas the U.S. produces 4%. Takeaway: it’s way too late to wage war with China. Best get along …

Quite the foolish statement you have there, Lee Harvey. The winner of the war will not be decided by which country can produce the most steel. The war will not be fought over a matter of years or decades; it will likely be over in a matter of months, if not weeks. It's very unlikely that the U.S. would run out of something like tanks in a matter of months. We have 10,000 Abrams tanks, with some of them in storage, that can be made ready relatively quickly.

It will be decided by which country has the best technology, the best military leadership, and best-trained soldiers. The U.S. will win those battles hands down. The U.S. has technology that the Chinese have no answer for, like F-35's and quiet submarines that are nearly impossible to detect. China just has a lot of missiles and a lot of troops. The U.S. has a much better system of training its military leaders, and rotating them through different branches of the service, so the different branches cooperate much better. China's military leaders are chosen based on political connections, and are not allowed to transfer, lest one of them get control of the entire military and overthrow the CCP (a common communist fear based on experience). The U.S. also has experience winning wars militarily in the last century--China does not. China lost its last war in 1979 against a militarily depleted . . . Vietnam. And I don't think the Chinese can come anywhere close to the training levels of U.S. troops (especially special forces), other than possibly in general fitness. China is still assembling wooden mockups of U.S. carriers in the desert, which puts them on the same level as Iran for troop training (this screams "can't hit the broad side of a barn--need a bigger target, and make sure it stays still while we attack it").

LOL at anyone envisioning fighting a land war with China in its own backyard. Our military is gay and decrepit and the only troops that have seen action are the ones that were chased out of Afghanistan by goat herders.
