This is a great interview of Jordan Castell and his description of what the defense looks like this year has me fired up!!!

He says are the right things and you can tell the coaches are focusing on the details and the problems last year's defense had... with the appropriate coaching corrections. That's the part that gets me fired up.

This is just one more more reason to feel a lot more confident about our defense this coming season. Let's not forget that with a decent defense last year, I think we have a winning season. That's enough about last year, this year will be different with out a doubt.

Castell appeared in all 12 games and started the last 11, playing the most defensive snaps with 660. He only missed 51 defensive snaps on the season and was one of two Gators (Jason Marshall Jr. / 651) to play 600-plus snaps.

Castell’s week three performance (10 tackles and a pass breakup) in the 29-16 victory over No. 11 Tennessee earned him a pair of weekly honors in SEC Freshman of the Week and Shaun Alexander National Freshman of the Week.

I love all the optimism with this but at the end of the day - show me.

Unfortunately with secondary play it only takes one busted coverage or one bad performer to make the whole unit look terrible. He make be the second coming of VH3 but if the guy on the other side gets caught looking in the backfield the whole unit looks like stink.

4th and 17 will forever be etched in my memory banks.
Underestimating Mizzou is exactly what got Mullen fired (among others).
Can't imagine that mishap for my life with an Urban Meyer coached team.

...our new co def coordinator was fired as defensive coordinator at Auburn who somehow gave up an even more horrific 4th and 31...

Wasn’t their defense vastly better than ours?

I hear you, but something good is happening... there are too many positive stories coming out now about how much better our defense is playing. Some of that has to be true.

Every year the past 3 or 4 years I tell myself the defense can’t get any worse. Yet every year it seems we do. I’m gonna stop telling myself that and hope for the best.

And how many years ago was the last time the Gators played in the SECCG? But I get what you mean... since the "80's the Gators have had good to great defensive units, even on really bad offensive teams. It's just odd that since Grantham and his 3-4 base defense the Gators have been subpar consistently.

We need to get back to playing aggressive in your face defense... And we need to give up that passive... wait and see... bend-over and break... prevent defense that is the 3-4 base defense. 3 down lineman give opposing QBs all day long to wear down our defense and even with 8 defenders roaming around the field it will not stop a QB with wheels.

But enough of the past. I have a healthy bit of confidence that all these articles are telling us the truth about our new and improved defense. Can't wait!

I will take the 5 points per game improvement to our defense he had at Auburn. Durkin who is taking over at Auburn had a near identical scoring average with much better talent at aTm and being in his second year with Robert's only in his first. Defense in the SEC was pretty much Bama and Uga and then everybody else.

And we don’t question the coaching for Alabama and George’s defense, but the real difference is the talent level.

Yeah, I'm still waiting to see if this BN guy can evaluate, recruit and develop actual SEC level talent too. Update: I finally found my reading glasses! We may possibly be ok after all! Perhaps I'll hold off on the wailing and the gnashing of teeth in the town square for just a bit. Is it 8/31 yet?

    How's this for a defense?
247Sports just listed our toughest individual opponents at each player position.
    They're claiming the....
#1 cornerback we face is Kentucky's Maxwell Hairston (SEC's top returning CB)
#1 interior defensive lineman we face is Kentucky's Deone Walker (6' 6" 348 Jr)
#2 linebacker we face is Kentucky's Jamon Dumas-Johnson (Sr)

I doubt that is exactly true. We didn’t have much.
