God I love my state and glad God will finally be coming back to our state schools. Finally Landry is bringing some sense back to Louisiana. Landry should take full administrative control over the cesspool that is New Orleans and maybe that city can become a halfway decent city again.

You cannot define this as anything other than idolatry which iirc is frowned upon by the good book.

I don’t know anybody who thinks that they are “enlightened” because they have faith, and that the unbeliever is unenlightened.

I don’t know the people that you personally have run into, but in my experience, the Christians who share their faith with someone do not do so because they feel sorry for the person. And they surely don’t because they think that someone is a troglodyte. They do so out of a genuine concern for that person’s eternal destiny.

There is a positive and a negative aspect to the gospel. Jesus said in Matthew 11:28–30 (ESV): 28 “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

And in probably the most well-known verse in the world, John 3:16 (ESV): “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

Jesus offers eternal life, which actually begins at the moment of belief, not just after death.

There is also the negative aspect of the gospel, and that is the judgment that awaits all of us. Jesus said in Matthew 7:13 (ESV): “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many.”

It is your free choice to accept or reject the gospel. Again, people don’t present the gospel to you because they pity you. They present the gospel because they care about your salvation.

There have been some who use Christianity to get rich, but they are such a small minority.

The reality is that most of the abject poverty in the world is due to corrupt and inefficient governments. Those governments usually require any outside aid to funnel through their pockets, with a lot of it never reaching the people.

I’m not sure your sentence expresses what you intended: you fail to believe in one more. That would mean you believe in the same number. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think you meant to say that we believe in only one more God than you do.

I’ve heard this 100 times, but I think it’s the wrong mathematical operation. The proper operation is not addition, it is multiplication. By what factor does the number of gods you believe must be multiplied in order to reach the number of gods that we believe in. That leap is infinite.

Might have been posted here, but I saw a suggestion today that teachers who disagree with this should simply post the basic tenets of every major religion on their walls with this. And watch how fast the hypocrisy comes when Muslim or Buddhist tenets are posted.

Will this even pass? I'm pretty sure it was struck down in TX a year ago.

Help me out here. Can you genuinely not see how that may sound arrogant? If not, I think we've found the issue I presented.
It's tantamount to "I know what's going to happen to you, and essentially you can't see it."
You are very much entitled to an opinion about how you think it plays out, but you don't own the right to knowing what happens in the end just because someone in some nice robes guarantees you that it's true. That's what they are paid to tell you.
    None of us do.

Besides, I don't think I need 'Salvation'. I am a good person who cares about others, treats people with respect and lives my life in service. Indeed, I'd auger I live my life with greater tolerance, understanding that a significant number who have been Baptised or Christened. You say we all get judged - again that's your opinion, not necessarily truth. But, I wonder, can you see it's just an opinion? I fear not as to admit it's just one person's view would open the door of critical thinking and, crucially, the potential to be wrong.

To me, the most important judgement is my own - if I'm not doing enough to be a good person, it's on my to fix it and improve things.
And you know what? If I'm not bound for 'Heaven' because I don't worship your, or any person's God, frankly, so be it. It would prove to me it's not about the content of the way I live my life, but my willingness to cow-tow to dogma and deity. If that's religion, I'll pass. What I do with my life matters, not where I stand on a Sunday morning.

That's an excuse to point at Government. The point stands - religion could wipe out poverty on its own, if it wished. It doesn't.
If I worshipped a religion and knew that if it collectively willed it, wanted us to worship in a simple commune or my own front room if it meant we could eliminate global suffering from poverty together, I'd absolutely do it. People at the top won't, though, because it's also about influence and power and that would be lessened in that scenario. Shame though, I could absolutely get behind that.

One might suggest that's semantics, as you understood what I meant though. Christians think Muslims have it wrong and vice versa. Hinduism, Shintoism, Judaism, Zoroastrianism likewise etc. All variations who think others have it wrong, so much that people still continue to prejudice and kill in their chosen faith's name, as they have done for centuries.

When I'm criticised for not believing in "God" (which is interesting - I consider myself agnostic, not atheist - nobody really knows, right?), I find the hypocrisy quite startling. And arrogant, given how many claim to know the answer for certain.

I find it odd that we talk about our fandom for the Gators, Lightning, Rays, Man U, whoever and no one says that we are forcing our fandom upon them, but speak about something that we genuinely feel is more important in the grand scheme and people say we are forcing it.

    No one is forcing it.

Telling others about the beauty of the true gospel is not arrogant. The story of the true gospel is the sharing of a life changing event that we all hope everyone can be open too because we have experienced it. If I believed the bridge was out a mile ahead and tried to warn you, would you think i was "forcing" you to pull over? Even if I had bad info and the bridge turned out to be ok, the motives were not arrogant.

None of that is equal to "forcing".

    Is pride month "forcing"?
    Is Christmas " forcing"?

(Not saying you feel that way Limey, just asking in general)

In this political moment, having a conservative Christian wanting to start a discussion with you about faith feels like Anton Chigurh asking you to choose head or tails

Finally caught up to the present in this thread. Interesting stuff. I just want to provide some words from FA Hayek on when a distinction is discrimination:

So long as, for instance, the distinction is favored by the majority both inside and outside the group, there is a strong presumption that it serves the ends of both. When, however, only those inside the group favor the distinction, it is clearly privilege; while if only those outside favor it, it is discrimination. What is privilege to some is, of course, always discrimination to the rest.

I like the comparison between religion and Fandom.

The real One True Truth just depends on where you're from, and the One True Team on what college you or your family attended.

I think, to address your point, at least sports fans recognize the arbitrary nature of it all.

Already been the mentioned the ultimate irony is that cult leader and personification of the Republican Party has endorsed the Louisiana law mandating display of the Ten Commandments even though he has broken most of them and has never expressed contrition for doing so. And not surprising his supporters are so up his anal orifice that they fail to realize the blatant hypocrisy.

Ten Commandments is a dog whistle to Republicans in the same way as the fear that a pregnant woman might have to drive three hours to execute her baby is a dog whistle to Democrats.

Seems to me there is a reason the constitution says much about religious freedom and not sports freedom. There isnt a history of persecution of groups as a result of sports fandom. If there were, we'd likely have a protection level in the constitution for it.

Understood. But this constant claim of "forcing" by many on this board is hogwash that they have never bathed in. Very few here have been forced to do anything truly religious and if they were than that was wrong.

"Forcing" is as misused a word as "bigotry".

Curious to know what options you'd propose to a 13 year old daughter who became pregnant against her will?
How would you and your family handle this?
You have strong opinions, so do tell us.

    Interesting analogy.

For me, based on that, of course I wouldn't.
However, I also feel that's an oversimplification of how it manifests in reality.

I feel it's closer to suggest that often religion, and many of those with faith -you're absolutely right- Tilly, won't force me to turn back, but they definitely present me as naive (or in need of 'salvation') for continuing towards the bridge (even though their original advice comes from a place of complete speculation, not certainty.)

In my experience, I've never met anyone with a strong faith that was willing/able to see this point of view and is why I find it edges towards arrogance.
The definition of arrogance is "an attitude of superiority manifested in an overbearing manner or in presumptuous claims or assumptions"
I honestly can't read that without thinking of religion as a whole - not necessarily every individual within - but a significant majority.

To reiterate, I have no problem with anyone else turning back because they fear the bridge to be out.

We also have freedom of speech and freedom of religion here in the U.S.A., regardless of what the Dems think. I feel badly for the Europeans that can face jail time for speaking ill of someone that is in a "protected" group of people. That's NUTS...
