Any sport where it's called "amateur sports" and when in fact it is a billion dollar per year revenue producer where everyone profits but the players is a farce. It was always heading this way with these giant TV contracts. There needs to be rules in place but not paying players is immoral.
Yeah, they’ve been paying players for three decades and we pretend they aren’t. It’s become pretty ridiculous but how many heads up goes their asses
When players want to get paid they play professional sports when players want to play a sport and not get paid we call that amateur sports. In amateur sports it doesn't matter how much the system makes because it's amateur. Why is this hard to comprehend? The beauty is if you want to get paid to play then you play professional sports. Full stop. No one owes you anything when you choose to play amateur sports.
It's the other way around, annual contributor to the general fund. . . for now. Given the rising costs of fielding a team, I'd expect that to go down or end altogether. Winning!!!!
So would I and so would a lot of others. Keep feeding the greedy monster and we may get our wish, or something similar. Problem is, I don't see UF going. We get stuck in the douche league.
Agreed. And while we're talking about selling our souls, why not completely sell our souls and get PIF to fund our athletic department? They literally have a bottomless well of cash to spend and would probably welcome the opportunity.
Not sure why this is so hard for you. Only 1% of players are good enough for the NFL. Why do you assume everyone else is a scrub? Are college baseball players "scrubs" compared to AAA players?
You mean the boosters that are going away? Don't believe me? Just watch. You're ruining the sport they love and you expect them to keep footing the bill? Not happening. This new format will have to be funded almost exclusively by TV money. Why would you be a big-time booster in this environment? You're not a bigshot anymore, just a mark on a call-center lead sheet. Not to mention, they're mostly boomers and half of that generation is already retired. You think Gen's X,Y and Z are filling that gap? LOL!!!
Even now, I still watch THE GATORS. Everything else can fly off a cliff, but I'll still watch the O&B simply because it's UF.
So, why do you like college football then? Seems you "don't care" about all the things that (used to) set college football apart from professional sports. I'm curious why someone as transactional as you isn't just an NFL fan anyway? It's an odd dichotomy to say the least.
The reason I don’t like the nfl is freeagency and individuals instead of teams. I’m starting not to like college either. I’ve never cared if a kid went to class or not other than the rules say so. They let kids in who don’t belong in a classroom in the first place so the student athlete part to me has always been a farce,
Gator players all for the most part are trying to make it to Sundays and although not many will, the football we watch is a much higher level than most teams. I will watch , Bama Auburn or OSU/ Mich. Believe it or not there are many college football fans that don’t give a shit about the classroom. I did not go to Florida and none of my six boys who are all gator fans and attend games, none of themwent to Florida either. I’m not really sure why people are college fans instead of NFL, but that’s the way it is
Amateur sports don’t pay $10 million a year to their coach and have 90,000 fans paying big money to get in. College football is amateur by name only.
There's more loyalty in the NFL now. Not much of an answer given the recent paradigm change. And yet you hate the idea of an NFL minor league that could have prevented all this. No offense, but you're all over the place here. You want the college team to be pro (detached from the university altogether, pay the players, no contributions to general fund or general athletic department) but you don't like the pros because they're . . . . professionals?
Why would you? $100 handshakes are cool and fun. Being hit up by a call center once a month? Not so much.
There’s no loyalty in the nfl, only binding contracts. The portal is what I hate most because every player can split multiple times a year. As far as a minor league, college has always been the monor league and top players have been paid for ages. The only thing new in my eyes is the portal. And yes, I have a problem with the university making hundreds of millions and putting the payroll on the boosters. It’s none of my business what a booster does with his money though, go for it if that’s what they want to do.
