Right-wing politics is basically all about what has been termed "the right to be cool." They have basically achieved victory on a policy level, but they are not loved. When media people, students or protestors aren't praising them for their bold truth telling, it must be because those people are ignorant, brainwashed, or whatever. Most of what we are witnessing is about conservatives wanting to be loved, because power isn't enough I suppose. They have built up this sort of idea of liberal cultural 'power' in their heads, and want that themselves. We are finding out the lengths of what the worst people will go to to try to make something that sucks cool.
State, Farmworker Association of Florida spar over immigration law injunction Attorneys for the state squared off this week with lawyers for immigrants and an advocacy group after an unusual twist in a challenge to a Florida law aimed at cracking down on illegal immigration. The lawsuit, filed in July by The Farmworker Association of Florida, Inc. and individual plaintiffs, centers on part of a 2023 law that threatens felony charges for people who transport into Florida an immigrant who “entered the United States in violation of law and has not been inspected by the federal government since his or her unlawful entry.” Siding with the plaintiffs on May 22, U.S. District Judge Roy Altman issued an injunction prohibiting enforcement of that part of the law statewide. But the following day, the judge issued an order appearing to second-guess his decision and asked for “further briefing on the proper scope of the injunction.” ... “By making it a felony to transport into Florida someone who ‘has not been inspected by the federal government since his or her unlawful entry,’ Section 10 (the disputed section of the law) extends beyond the state’s authority to make arrests for violations of federal immigration law and, in so doing, intrudes into territory that’s preempted,” Altman, who was appointed as a federal judge in 2018 by former President Donald Trump, wrote.
Shitty governor sucks at governing. Breaking news at 11. All the Desantis worshippers and anti-LGBTQ+ folks on here will be along anytime to valiantly defend their guy I’m sure, though.
They don't have the cultural power and that does bother them. They do want to be loved and they are ultimately unlovable. That is a big problem.
I’m anti turning little boys into little girls and little girls into little boys. So, to the extent that DeSantis is opposed to that level of vomitous depravity I applaud him.
Highly unlikely. It's possible they'll do it in the future, but this case isn't the right vehicle for it.
I defer to you on such things. You know my cynicism. I conducted no substantive analysis other than the FSC will protect him. Is there a way they could prevent turnover while still not upholding his ridiculous executive privilege claims?
The First DCA affirmed the denial of the records on procedural grounds. They ruled that Dempsey should have never opined on the executive privilege issue because it wasn't necessary to resolve the case. (It was also clear to me watching the argument that the panel did not like the state's executive privilege argument.)
This is sad: ‘They’re treating us like we’re spies’: Florida property ban has Chinese citizens fuming
It's before the Eleventh Circuit. I tend not to bet on them to do the right thing, but now and then, they surprise. I won't be holding my breath.
