On the stump Sunday in Las Vegas:

    TRUMP:
"I say, ‘What would happen if the boat sank from its weight, and you’re in the boat, and you have this tremendously powerful battery, and the battery’s now underwater, and there’s a shark that’s approximately 10 yards over there?’
“By the way, a lot of shark attacks lately, do you notice that? Lot of sharks. I watched some guys justifying it today: ‘Well they weren’t really that angry, they bit off the young lady’s leg because of the fact that they were not hungry but they misunderstood who she was.’ These people are crazy. He said, ‘There’s no problem with sharks, they just didn’t really understand a young woman swimming.’ No, really got decimated, and other people, too, a lot of shark attacks.
“So I said, ‘There’s a shark 10 yards away from the boat, 10 yards, or here. Do I get electrocuted if the boat is sinking, water goes over the battery, the boat is sinking? Do I stay on top of the boat and get electrocuted, or do I jump over by the shark and not get electrocuted?’ Because I will tell you, he didn’t know the answer.
“He said, ‘You know, nobody’s ever asked me that question.’ I said, ‘I think it’s a good question. I think there’s a lot of electric current coming through that water.’ But you know what I’d do if there was a shark or you get electrocuted? I’ll take electrocution every single time. I’m not getting near the shark. So we’re going to end that, we’re going to end it for boats, we’re going to end it for trucks.”

“It is irresponsible to obsess over President Biden’s tendency to mangle a couple of words in a speech while Donald Trump is out there sounding detached from reality. Biden, who is old, at least makes sense. Trump, who also is old, rants like someone you’d cross the street to avoid.

In 2016, Trump said outrageous things at his campaign rallies to be entertaining. In 2024, his tangents raise serious questions about his mental fitness.“

Stream of consciousness to overwhelm whomever he is speaking to. I'm sure in some of his business dealings it was effective as they would either agree just to shut him up or all the bs was just too much to process at the time ( later regretting it). aka firehose of bullshit.

So, and I realize that this is a little loony on its face, I have a question about this existential "shark v. battery" debate that is sweeping the land ("By the way, a lot of shark attacks lately, do you notice that? Lot of sharks.")

As far as I can tell he is trying to rage against EV's or something, right? But in the end, he chooses the EV's (by proxy.) "I’ll take electrocution every single time. I’m not getting near the shark. So we’re going to end that, we’re going to end it for boats, we’re going to end it for trucks.”"

I assume what he is ending here isn't the Shark Package for boats and trucks. Batteries, I guess. Or EV's, although I'm not sure how electric boats got involved.

What is it that he was even under the impression that he was saying?

I read it out loud to my wife. She got a glazed look on her gorgeous face and said, "AFLACK!" loud enough to cause our dog to suddenly raise his head up as if to say "Huh?"

I thought whataboutism was for the intellectually stunted….at least that’s the precedent that was established on gatorcountry. Per your lead, we are permitted to engage in whataboutism again. Thank you my lord.

    He is such a moron.

Ok, lets play his stupid game.

The battery goes under water. Now there is a VERY strong current between the negative and positive polls. No where else in the water would there be current. No risk of being electrocuted.

    Moron.

A big difference is that some if not the majority of the posts supposedly showing that Biden is cognitively challenged have been the result of creative editing the ones showing Biden trying to sit in a nonexistent chair at the D-Day event and the one supposedly showing Biden being aided by Jill to walk in the right direction coming immediately to mind while Trump's performance at his Las Vegas rally didn't require any editing at all. By the way the explanation of his performance is rather simple. His teleprompter was malfunctioning and he tried to ad lib. The fact that he came over as bat shit crazy really didn't matter to his supporters since he did put on a rather entertaining show.
How Republicans used misleading videos to attack Biden in a 24-hour period

So, and I can't believe I sank any additional resources into this, apparently once the Teleprompter went down and he was on his own, he tried to pivot to attacking renewable energy. His concern is apparently that a battery on an electric boat would cause it to sink, leading to this impossible choice of having to choose death by electrocution or being eaten alive by a shark. But my favorite new piece of info was how it started:

"It must be because of M.I.T., my relationship with M.I.T., very smart..."

Now he's talking about water and batteries. This is what Trump had to say about water and magnets earlier this year. It's almost as if Trump is a complete and utter fool.

"Think of it, magnets," Trump said. "Now all I know about magnets is this, give me a glass of water, let me drop it on the magnets, that's the end of the magnets. Why didn't they use John Deere? Why didn't they bring in the John Deere people? Do you like John Deere? I like John Deere."

He is such a narcissist that he believes his stories are amazing and that everyone is in full rapture as he tells them. It would never even occur to him, nor would he ever let himself accept that he sounds like a blathering idiot. So we will get a thousand more of these idiotic stories before he leaves this earth. Hopefully they are told as a private citizen and not as president.

Thankfully Trump was able to consult his best experts on the case to give him this info so you know he knows what he’s talking about. These guys don’t trust the science and do their own research!

I assume you are referring to the wapo article linked above. Whataboutism is an interesting double edged sword. On one hand, comparisons must be permitted or how else are we to put anything into context? On the other hand, if we can answer all concerns with “but Biden” or “but Trump”, we will never really have to answer for anything. This is why I disagree with the wapo paragraph that pit quoted, as it somewhat shields Biden from any criticism due to the favorable comparison with Trump. While I agree that Trump seems dangerously out of touch with reality, this doesn’t mean that Biden’s mental faculties must be above criticism. We need to permit both absolute judgements and judgements relative to others.
