wait…was that their centerfielder? And did the announcers ever let us know how many come from behind wins Clemson had this year? Asking for a friend…
I think what made it sweeter was wasn't it Willie Mays who was the closest to that last hit? And all he could do was jog and watch the winning ball hit the grass and roll away from him.
Special props from me to: 1) Dale Thomas for his perfect sacrifice bunt in the 13th; 2) Michael Robertson for getting the walk off hit. It has to feel especially great for Mikey getting the biggest hit of his young life after being benched for long periods eary in the season for not being able to hit. He came through in the biggest way possible today. And Luke Heyman, after going 0-6, came through with the leadoff single in the 13th to get it started. A true team effort.
I give huge props to the Clemson CF for a great catch but it wasn't anything like the Mays catch. Willie saw it off the bat, turned and ran hard, and never looked back. He just KNEW where it would be.
I saw that Willie Mays catch in real time. On live TV, I think. We did have TV in 1952, right? I know I wasn't at the game.
Even if I got a game winning hit, untucked and held my arms up, nobody would want to take my shirt off.
Even though Neely gave up the three run homer he was HUGE this weekend and last weekend. He needs a mention.
