We were 1 game from not making it to the postseason. Now we are 1 game from the CWS. We took arguably our best team in history last year to the final game. This team is no where near that team, but the grit here late in the season has been truly impressive. Knowing our team was amazing last year meant a lot of pressure and expectations. This year it feels like we are playing with house money and they have already exceeded expectations. Sometimes it is scenario #2 that brings it home.
Today’s game is completely different from my playing days. It used to be that 115-130 pitches in a starter’s outing was considered normal. In today’s world, not so much. 121 pitches in an outing truly depends on the athlete himself (is he been stretched out to that, what kind of endurance shape is he in, and what are his routines starting with from the time he comes out of the game and up until his next start). Your body produces lactic acids when you are competing at “game speed”. The lactic acids settling in your muscles and joints is what makes you stiff and sore. If you ice your shoulder and elbow immediately after competing you’re in effect making it tougher on yourself. The preferred routines to help displace the built up lactic acids are usually immediately after coming out of the game riding a stationary bike and low impact band work on the shoulders and elbow. The fresh blood flow your body produces with these low impact exercises will help push the lactic acids on out thus making your recovery times better. Then ice. Plus the running/conditioning/and throwing protocols in your regular routine between starts are all met. Yesterday’s SP being “on the bucket” during BP the next day is by design to increase the amount of moving, bending, and stretching he gets. To try and answer your question about a pitcher’s availability after throwing 60 pitches—well, for me 60 pitches is the work load that’s going to need/require an extra day or more of rest. All of the things I have mentioned talking about starting pitchers to some degree applies to relief pitchers as well. Everything depends on how stretched out they are, their conditioning, and their post game routines. As a coach you have to take into account that it’s a 18-21 yr old you’re asking how he feels. True competitors are gonna say “I’m good Coach”. You’ve got to go as much with what you see as what you hear.
Yesterday's ptiches Neely 59 Jameson 60 Peterson 53 Are they all good on Monday if needed? I would assume Neely and Jameson have 30 to 50 pitches in them. 2 or 3 innings each? Peterson in an extra inning role if it went there?
Thanks for this excellent information 74. I assumed that Neely and Jameson are not available today but would be ready tomorrow, if necessary. Hoping Cags can pitch 5 and then it becomes a big question: Who would be the next men up? Clemente, Fisher, Slater, Menendez...I assume Coppola in reserve for a possible game three.
Just my opinion but those three should have gotten in some real roadwork in this morning to run soreness and stiffness out. Also a lot of stretching all during the day today. Soft toss only today. The Monday question will have to be answered on Monday IMHO.
Anybody know where the Gator families/friends (i.e. tickets from UF) will be seated today? Thinking of making the drive up I-85 and going to the game. Secondary market prices still kind of lofty but it's an easy 90-minute drive for me.
[QUOTE="74nole, post: 16554191, member: 5804 The Monday question will have to be answered on Monday IMHO.[/QUOTE] LOL. That certainly seemed to our pitching plan yesterday: win today and worry about tomorrow tomorrow.
Well stated 74. When Alan and Bryan were pitching it was not uncommon for 100+ pitches,… when you were throwing if you could scratch the top of your head it meant your arm was good for another 30-50 pitches! Times have changed!! I’d be shocked if there aren’t some sore arms all through the staff at this point of the season. Throwing a baseball 95 mph is not something your shoulder or elbow was created for. I’d be shocked to see Neely or Jameson. It’ll be mix/match once Jac is done if it’s close. Sully isn’t gonna blow his pitching reputation with over use of KIDS,…even if they are getting paid something in NIL.
Agree100%@rball1313—back in Bryan and Alan’s time when they got above 100 pitches I put my money on watching their leg drive and follow through. When that faltered they were done, you were paying more attention to their mechanics than the clicker. Bad mechanics = arm injuries regardless of who you are. Coach Mac was on the same page.
I'm not going to lie, I'd be playing today's game pretty conservatively. Start Coppola, leave Neely and Jameson at the team hotel*, hope to bash your way to a victory. And if you don't get it today, you have Caglianone prepared to start game three with Neely and Jameson able to throw an inning or two. But O'Sullivan won our only national title in 2017 by throwing caution to the wind and going all out to win a game two, so what do I know? *You obviously can't literally do this -- you want those two at the park to celebrate in case we wain. But, I don't know, take their cleats or something so they literally can't pitch.

You just don’t dress them. Don’t put them on the game roster. I don’t think it really matters as I’d be shocked if Sully ran either of those guys back out there today for any reason. Never know though. We have a long list of guys with great potential, but the list of guys who have some trust left at this point is getting shorter and shorter. I’d think Cags, Clemente, Menendez today. Hope those three guys can go get the W. That will require Cags to have a good day though. If those guys can’t get it done, you’ve still got Slater, Fisher, McNeillie, and a slew of other guys with loads of potential. Not much trust right now, but any of them could have a good outing. Also have Coppola. Is Sully comfortable bringing him in out of the pen yet if we have a late lead? Is that even the guy you’d want out there? Again, glad I just get to watch. My roster choices have no play, lol.
