100% on Spurrier. That was likely the single biggest factor in his decision to leave. It damn sure wasn’t the lure of Snyder’s Redskins.
I do believe you’re a bit harsh on Meyer. He poured himself into that job until he broke. Yes he shouldn’t have come back for the 2010 season, but Foley likely begged him to come back for one more year and it turned out to be a very bad decision

He would have come back but the admin wanted to see his resume!?!
SOS told them his resume was in the trophy case!
    Or so the story goes….

You could be correct about my being too harsh on Meyer.

What if there was a component, not discussed publicly, whereby Meyer wanted to pick his successor, wasn't successful, then "rescinded" his resignation to come back and try a second time (also unsuccessfully)?

Having gone to school at UF when we had exactly zero SEC titles in our history, I love those, too. Every year the Alligator would have a headline about whether this would be the Year of the Gator or not. But, no doubt, Nattys are a really good thing... I think Spurrier may have gotten more of those here had he stayed a while longer, too.

In my mind and my heart Spurrier is the greatest Gator ever. UF was a charter member of the SEC and took 60 years to win our first championship of any kind. Thank you SOS - we then reeled off 4 SEC Championships in a row. Then our first NC, followed by 2 more SEC Championships.

Urbs won twice as many NCs, and deserves the ROH for sure. The longer we wait to induct him into the ROH, the sillier we look by sullying some of our most glorious years.

But everything Steve Spurrier accomplished at UF was unprecedented. He gave us our first of everything.

Well said. In other words …if Spurrier never happened then Meyer wouldn’t have either.

Urban was a great coach, but no one has done more or means more to the to the Florida football program than Spurrier.

Urban won 2 SEC titles and 2 National titles. He won a lot of games, but he was so intense like it was life or death, it kind of made it stressful for all involved.

SOS won a Heisman trophy as a player, won 7 SEC titles in 12 years (yes I included 1990), 2 national title appearances and should have been more, if not for the end of year battles we had with FSU knocking each other out numerous times, a national Title, 5 losses at home in12 years and he filled the SEC record books with numerous records. The Man put Florida football on the map and made it super fun for all involved and was a moral standard in a league with low standards and that made all of us proud to be a Florida Gator.

SOS will be a Florida Gator until the day he dies. Urban not so much.

I’m sorry, but your Spurrier explanation makes it even worse. You are saying he left because the administration didn’t back him up over something they had no power to fix? What exactly should the administration have done? Complain to the NCAA about an FSU player doing something dirty? Have you ever seen a school’s administration obtain positive result on any such grievance? What are we even talking about here?

    Ehh... Perhaps.

Maybe if Charley Pell hadn't happened, Spurrier wouldn't have either.

    But no one knows.

True, Spurrier attended UF, Meyer did not.

It is also true that Spurrier coached against us, and clearly had us on the list of teams he very much wanted to beat. Meyer did not.

Meyer won 3 nattys at two different schools. Spurrier won only one.

Meyer belongs in the Hall of Fame.

    I can understand that.
So I take it you weren’t around in 96 or 01, how about The Swindle?

There was no positive result to be obtained. The games were over and the scores recorded. That wasn’t going to change. But it would have brought to light just how dirty and corrupt FSU and St. Bobby was. It would have also brought to light earlier what we have all painfully learned over the years; that SEC refs are definitely not the cream of the crop. It got so bad in The Swindle that the NCAA was embarrassed into putting in replay. No thanks to Foley of course. He just sat there and let the media take Bobby’s c@c£ out of there mouths just ling enough to whine that Steve was whining.

When you’re people are rightly pointing out a wrong, you back them up. You don’t let them twist in the wind so you can suck up for media accolades.

Foley let the best coach we ever had, one with a lot of gas still left in the tank just walk away. Literally pushed him away.

I wasn't referring as to who belonged in the Hall, I was talking about who's the most important coach in UF history. I thought that was the argument.

Urban would have love to kick our ass, if he had the chance, especially after all the hate he got from the fans.

He was one of the best CEO coaches ever but he needed great coaches but more than the Spurriers and Sabans of the world.

He was amazing with what he did everywhere and especially with us. Hear Hear!

You’re wrong actually. Meyer loves as does his wonderful wife Shelly, Gainesville. Here always her favorite and he doesn’t care as much as you think about what some had said. He’s been though it all and from his per view he only sees love.
