Miss Alabama being bullied over her weight

I thought the whole point of conservativism was to promote an unhealthy lifestyle? Burgers, rolling coal, smoking menthols, drinking big sodas, owning guns, etc

 

Plus size? Is that the new feel good phrase for morbidly obese?

 

Obesity costs this country on the order of 200 billion a year in medical bills alone, over 20 percent of medical spending. It shaves up to 14 years off your life. It costs businesses almost 300 billion a year in lost productivity and other costs. And there a lot of other costs too, all of which we all pay for.
It shouldn’t be vilified, but iit shouldn’t be glorified either, and we shouldn’t be rewarding it for the sake of “diversity”. That said, the value of a woman should go far beyond her looks.

 

Actually the ideal is a woman who does all of them and still looks like this (in other words one who is fortunate enough to have really good genes that can offset an unhealthy life style):

 

I'm not reading those links or clicking on tiktok links, but that woman is obese and while I'd never condone attacking her for her weight, I definitely don't think it should be "celebrated".

Also: can we just end beauty pageants already?

 

Getting beat out by a guy won't help her self esteem.

 

I feel bad for teenage girls as "Beauty Pageants" is just one more thing to make them depressed about their appearance. But I absolutely agree we should promote a healthy lifestyle.

As our country has one of the highest obesity rates in the world, and probably the highest in The Western World, whatever we’re using as positive influence isn’t working.

All the people that defend them are like "its actually not superficial and about looks, its about the personality and craft, empowering women" ... and then someone who isnt superficially attractive wins and people go apeshit, call the woman a loser and give up the game.

 

Whether it’s still the case or impacting those numbers, I remember reading years ago that obesity was actually seen as attractive in parts of the South Pacific because it was tied to wealth.

 

A lot of hedging here. We know this isnt really about obesity, there would be trolls claiming it was "diversity" run amok if a black or disabled person won too.

I would also argue semi-seriously there is nothing diverse about an overweight white person in Alabama! She is probably more representative of the population in this country! A diversity win would be the fit person!

 

Black women win beauty pageants regularly, even in Alabama… there’s rarely outrage. If a disabled person won, I agree with you, those same trolls would assume it’s DEI garbage, depending on what the disability was or how severe it was.

 

My basic point is that the people that have these things claim its not about superficial qualities, and when they actually do do it even smart people are like "you cant promote obesity like this." We probably both think these competitions are stupid and demeaning, but the people that defend them want it both ways at times. They want only hotties to win, but also that its not about looks, someone's personality, talent or accomplishments.

 

They make shots for that now. Obesity about to be a thing of the past for those who care about it.

 

It largely already was with gastric bypasses, exercise and eating well. There is a really small subset with true medical concerns. But obesity is really a 20th century phenomena. Fat women were rare enough at one point that they were in freak shows in carnivals. Obesity rates have tripled since 1960. Our behavior changed, not our genes.

 

Isn't she fairly representative of an average Alabama woman though?

 

That's what I said. The "diversity hire" would be someone that is in marathon shape. This is actually unwokifying pageants.
