My 4 year old son is obsessed with sports. We watch anything that's on the TV basically. We put on cricket the other day and he asked me who was winning and what all the numbers were on the bottom.... Zero clue
I learned about rugby this way. My sports loving son started watching it at like 6 yrs old. We learned a bit together. He outgrew it and is a good ol' fashioned American (major pro/college sports) 13 year old now.
lol! I have this argument all the time with my son who plays baseball. All these guys on Team USA are amateur cricketers who have played for their national team at some level before immigrating to the US. FWIW, my sons baseball coach who played 8 years in the MLB and has played cricket in Australia thinks cricket is the tougher sport.
Thanks @obgator for this thread, it was fun, and I'm glad it worked out. You would have been gutted if you jinxed it haha.
The nepotism in the south Asian sports federations makes this a place where we could compete without a ton of effort. Maybe not win titles but be internationally competitive. A friend of mine was on the one of the regional junior teams in India. He was possibly national team material, but told me his road stopped there becuase the regional sports director for Karnataka put his son up to the next level ahead of him, and stuff like that was common. I did get to walk down on the pitch in Bangalore with him though, which was kind of cool.
Yeah, it's a massive upset of a traditional powerhouse cricket team by USA. But, is the USA cricket team hotter than the Swedish Soccer team? That's really the bar here.
I hope people understand and appreciate how big of an upset this is. This would be like India or Pakistan beating a full strength USA team in basketball.
Can’t wait for the movie. I read this thread hours after and didn’t understand half of it, but was riveted by obgator’s nonsensical updates.
Amazing, if I were asked to draw a cricket player — or a Software Engineer — I would have drawn that guy.
I have a team of software engineers from India. They were giving me play by play, percentage odds etc. as the match wound down. They were all rooting for the US because they hate Pakistan, plus there are a bunch of Indian expats on our team.
