California Fast Food Restaurants have cut 10,000 jobs since $20 Minimum Wage

Anyways, oh no, what will people do in an economy with what amounts to full employment? Also this has been well covered before. Delivery has already been being outsourced, the wage increase simply accelerated an ongoing trend.

 

Just for reference there are an estimated 540000 fast food workers in California. Not really commenting on minimum wage just adding some context.

 

Also from reading an article on the Mexico thread, I discovered a Big Mac in Mexico costs only a few cents less than one in America (Its over $5 there too right now). The minimum wage in Mexico is currently about $2 hour, so the price correlation of fast food to labor costs alone is pretty dubious.

 

What about the other number that’s 54 times bigger making more money? Do we not care about them?

 

When the Convict trump has completed his deportation of immigrants there will be plenty of work in the lettuce fields.

 

Those 10,000 people should learn plumbing or electrical work. We need tradesmen in the worst way, and the pay is substantially higher.

 

Unemployment was under 4% officially in April (I doubt the May numbers will change much when they come out), the job market is good for anyone looking for a job. Its the best time to increase wages, and you are crying like its the great depression out there or something.

Most of the people being laid off are delivery people, odds are they will move over to uber/grubhub, etc. Those jobs were being outsourced already. This is also happening in Florida (and I assume basically everywhere), but for some reason when it happens in California, the conservative media goes bananas. I've had someone I do business with cut their delivery staff in half in the last year because they've outsourced to ubereats. But no national conservative press about how Florida's minimum wage is a job killer.

 

There are tons of trades schools with tuition waivers, scholarships and work-study programs where they place you with a company to get paid while you work and get the education. Just takes some hard work and dedication.

 

Why does a Big Mac cost over $5 in Mexico and also over $5 here when one place pays their workers $2/hour and the other pays $15-20/hr? A hamburger definitely doesnt cost 7-10 times more here than there.
