Anyways, oh no, what will people do in an economy with what amounts to full employment? Also this has been well covered before. Delivery has already been being outsourced, the wage increase simply accelerated an ongoing trend.

Just for reference there are an estimated 540000 fast food workers in California. Not really commenting on minimum wage just adding some context.

Also from reading an article on the Mexico thread, I discovered a Big Mac in Mexico costs only a few cents less than one in America (Its over $5 there too right now). The minimum wage in Mexico is currently about $2 hour, so the price correlation of fast food to labor costs alone is pretty dubious.

I'm sure that will be very reassuring to the 10,000 fast food workers in California that no longer have a steady paycheck and will have to find work quickly and probably piece together part time jobs as full time jobs have vanished in many industries. And for those that can't could very quickly end up homeless. Real compassion there.

What about the other number that’s 54 times bigger making more money? Do we not care about them?

When the Convict trump has completed his deportation of immigrants there will be plenty of work in the lettuce fields.

And now that inflation has gone up including fast food prices a lot of those higher wages will be eaten up to the point where they didn't really help.

Fast food jobs were never meant to be career jobs. They were meant for teenagers and college students to get experience. If you keep raising wages the cost of living will go up to offset, so your buying power doesn't go up at all.

It reminds me of when big companies in my area would have union negotiations. All of the apartment complexes knew exactly what happened during the union negotiations and how much of a raise the employees would get. They would then immediately raise their rents, essentially eating up all of their raises. Heck raise the fast food wage to $40/hr., just don't complain then when a McDonalds meal is $20-$25.

And do you really think it's going to stop at 10,000? There are 540,000 fast food workers in California now. The layoffs and closures are just starting. I guarantee you within a year that number will be below 500,000 so we're talking probably at least 50,000 losing their jobs. So again what do you say to those people?

Those 10,000 people should learn plumbing or electrical work. We need tradesmen in the worst way, and the pay is substantially higher.

I thought your side said Americans wouldn't do those jobs? So you are admitting that Americans will perform those jobs which means the illegal immigrants aren't needed. Thanks for the clarification.

Unemployment was under 4% officially in April (I doubt the May numbers will change much when they come out), the job market is good for anyone looking for a job. Its the best time to increase wages, and you are crying like its the great depression out there or something.

I don't disagree but how are they going to go back to school when they are literally focused just of surviving and having a place to live? You still have to live which means you still have to have a job. And it's not like 2 - 3 years ago when everyone was hiring. I don't see nearly the amount of "now hiring" signs that I saw 2 - 3 years ago, so many of these people could be out of work for several months. Hard to go to school with no income.

The same thing you just did? Fast food isn't a career? I mean, you're allowed to say it, am I not allowed or something?

Most of the people being laid off are delivery people, odds are they will move over to uber/grubhub, etc. Those jobs were being outsourced already. This is also happening in Florida (and I assume basically everywhere), but for some reason when it happens in California, the conservative media goes bananas. I've had someone I do business with cut their delivery staff in half in the last year because they've outsourced to ubereats. But no national conservative press about how Florida's minimum wage is a job killer.

There are tons of trades schools with tuition waivers, scholarships and work-study programs where they place you with a company to get paid while you work and get the education. Just takes some hard work and dedication.

Why does a Big Mac cost over $5 in Mexico and also over $5 here when one place pays their workers $2/hour and the other pays $15-20/hr? A hamburger definitely doesnt cost 7-10 times more here than there.

Let me let you in on a secret, Apartment Companies were going to raise the rent anyway ... the workers need the raise to keep up with housing costs ... your understanding of how things work is entirely backwards.
