A University of Florida research employee and students have been implicated in an illegal, multi-million dollar scheme investigated by the Justice Department to fraudulently buy thousands of biochemical samples of dangerous drugs and toxins that were delivered to a campus laboratory then illicitly shipped to China over seven years, according to federal court records.

Among the students tied to the scheme was the president of UF’s Chinese Students and Scholars Association. The group openly protested a Florida law signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis last year that limits universities from recruiting students and faculty from China — and bans employing such students from working in academic labs without special permission.

Doesn’t sound like espionage, which is the “national security” concern some might have with Chinese nationals.

Sounds like the UF people were basically suckers who were low level participants in an organized crime scam. Yet the lab person clearly used their position at UF to advance the scam and commit crimes, so even though they plead ignorance I don’t see an out for them. Not clear what “the students” did, but if they did similar to the researcher (filling false orders) they are probably screwed in terms of being fired/expelled and deported at the least.

Yeah I agree. If the materials are so important or dangerous, why can a person order them with just an .edu email address in the science department? This seems like people wanting to get around China's laws about importing certain things - for what reason, I don't know. Though if I had to guess, probably similar reasons to why people break our laws about importing weird animals. Black market probably.
