You’d be wrong, generally speaking. My kids are in their 20’s, and I’m close to them. I’m close to my nephews and nieces (mid-20’s to late 40’s). I have friends of all cultures and color. I’ve just never heard the term, “thug,” to be a racial insult. But, and I will readily admit it, it is entirely conceivable that it’s just something I wasn’t tuned into. I’m gonna ask around over the next few days.

 

You are certainly out of touch if you have never even heard about this. It's not even debatable that this conversation has been going on for well over a decade. A quick Google search will show you results of people discussing it in 2014-2015... notably Richard Sherman, Charles Barkley and others. You are free to disagree with the assessment the word now has racial connotations to it, but that's not what you did. You disagreed and denied that there is even a perception out there.

So now I’ve checked with both my son and some friends. And … I’m out of touch. I stand corrected and now I know.

 

To assert that referring to a violent black Criminal as a “thug” is racist ….. because some relatively minor population of intellectually challenged sports writers and fans used the term to refer to another relatively small population of black athletes is profoundly misguided and patently ridiculous.

This is how the progressive facist thought police try to control language and non-adherents of the culturally deficient left. Heck, this message board is rife with that “stuff” ….. with some of it coming from certain ostensibly intelligent, objective “moderators”.

I wouldn’t say I’m “insulated.” But I just haven’t heard the term in that context, and as I said before, it might just be because I haven’t listened that carefully. No other way to say it … mea culpa.

 

I’m almost certain the thread starter called the Jan 6th people thugs in that title as a tongue-in-cheek response to the use of the term thugs to describe blacks and or who protested during the BLM marches in an effort to lump them together with criminals and looters who were also present.

 

"Thugs" is 100% used to replace a less acceptable word. That doesn't mean that every time someone uses the term it is is intended that way. Check the comment section of any local news rag online. But if you haven't noticed this you're naive as hell.

This is a salient point. Plenty of posters on here will quickly call a black athlete who gets arrested a thug (heck, some of them still refer to rival schools like Miami as “Thug U”). But you’ll never hear any of them call a white man like Donald Trump a thug, despite him being arrested and being accused of a litany of crimes for everything from fraud to rape.

 

In fairness we were kinda hard on Mike White bashers.

 

In fairness the term Rape-lisberger was a thing for a while. It doesnt change how people may use "thug" but it isnt like he got a hall pass from folks either.
